I'm about to buy a secondhand VW Golf Mk5 1.6Fsi Petrol engine 6 speed gearbox, 2004 reg with 120,000 miles on the clock. It has a full VAG service history & one owner. I'm buying from a secondhand car dealer & my only worry is when I hit 30 miles an hour I hear a throaty noise from the engine that sounds like a hole in the exhaust.

The seller has allowed me to look underneath, the exhaust is fine, he says that this is a noise that this model makes. I've revved it up stationary & the noise DOESN''T appear. Do any of you know what this might be?

    Welcome to VWAF

Will they allow you to open the bonnet and listen while someone revs the engine?

Yes. I'll try that, but do you have any idea of what it could be?

a throaty sound can be caused by a vibration, usually the air filter housing, vibrating. this is most noticeable when more air is going through it so often only noticed when driving and not when just revving. this applies to all cars though and not specific to a golf.

Check if the exhaust is cracked or broken at the flexi pipe, this usually makes more racket when driving, good for £100.00 reduction too!

Thanks everyone for the advice, I've checked the exhaust & it's OK. I'm taking another look tomorrow.
