With 18 years a8 is knowledgable and this i don't dispute. Now then, if the mk5 is as bad as a8 says, why have vw sold so many? Why aren't there more posts on here reporting problems? No manufacturer is ever going to make a bullit proof car, there will always be those cars that fail. Ties are far more issues with the mk4, turt look through the forum, they are getting old now and beginning to wear out, the mk5 is still new ish and will be good for a while yet. I wonder how many mk5's a8 has seen which don't have a problem, probably faq more than those that do have problems. The 2.0 140 gt tdi will senat up to 190 ish which is a bit better than the mk4's. I still think you need to think bish.

    Its soooo hard to decide!

I do like the audi's and must admit the skoda's are quite smart these days. But I want a VW purely because I can get cheap parts through the company I work for.

I prefer the looks and driving position of the Mrk4 but the newer Mr5 will have a better resale value when I eventually sell it!...But then again, I quite fancy keep the golf for a few years atleast so maybe that wont be a problem. Hmmmmmmm...... Really cant make my mind up. I have driven both a 130 Mrk4 and a mrk 5 140....keep thinking of the mrk 4 to be honest...but.....oh its so annoying!

I dont know about the torque figures for a standard mark 4... anyone know how it compares to the mrk 5?

I prefer the seating posisiton of the mk4 and the looks, I just think the mrk 5 handles better.

    I'd get the Mk 4, pd 130.

It can be mapped to about 180, and as those peeps on here with remapped 130 passats will tell you, they aint slow. Plus the golf should be lighter and therefore quicker.
