    Hi all
I have a vexing problem with the seat that is driving me crazy!! Its on the passenger side of a 1996 N Golf III cabrio.
Basically the seat back falls backward with the slightest bit of pressure and I can't figure out which part has gone.
I have had the hinge mech apart and replaced the rotating knob (the it used to adjust the backrest), but the seat back doesn't lock into position.
Its a scary state of affairs for passengers when they shoot backward on acceleration. Probably highly dangerous too!
Anyone had any experience of this or got any ideas?
    cheers

Sounds like it is not properly mated to the gear mechanism.

Does the adjustment knob spin at high speed when this happens?

Does it miss sometimes when adjusting the seat back?

    Hi, thanks for the response
Yes, I thing youre right about the improperly gated gear mechanism - the metal gear seems to be attached to the seat base and I suspect the teeth are worn.
Youre correct in the 'spinning adjuster' symptom.

The question is - can I just replace the gear mech or do I need a new seat base?

    cheers
