That's better these pipes aren't up to it and can be replaced or cleaned .The s3 now has a catch can and the EGR has just been removed.

Bringing this thread back to life for more advice...

Thanks to all the advice before-I have a further update
Since the PCV issue was temporarily addressed I had a further Oil change at 3000 miles-figured it could only help engine
However I used the Castrol edge 5w40 synthetic TD version- as I read I had extra additives which can help keep engine clean
However this dramatically worsened oil use- to 1l in 300miles
I ran out of oil to use so rummaged in garage and found some old mineral oil 15w40
USed 750ml to top up and it significantly reduced oil use- now with 3/4 synthetic and 1/4 mineral i is 1l in 600miles which i can tolerate

The question is as major engine work is not an option a I better changing to mineral, or part, or justthicker synthetic?

from experience i would immediately say it was overfilled with oil. oil either being returned to the oil breather and being burnt off or being forced through the piston rings and burnt off. if the smoke has died down its because the engine has burnt the over fill off. it is never good to overfill the oil and can cause some serious long term damage.
it sounds like some piston ring damage, does it start perfectly on cold and warm start ups?

    Hi
    no problems starting-so far
there was initially an overfilled sump, but since then I have been very careful to monitor level.
there is a minor leak 2 spots consistently to left and one to back of engine. However that isn't enough to explain the level of oil consumption- there is light grey smoke at slow speeds when engine is hot. And I know it's combusting oil.
I can't afford to invest a lot of ££ in engine or turbo work so just keep topping it and changing oil every 3000 miles

    Using 1litre every 500 miles
i wanted to know if any oil in particular would burn less as I would try it
