don't use longlife when there are much cheaper quality oils available.We stocked up with QX 5.40 fully synth from Europarts when they had it on offer recently for about £12 free filter.Let us know if you find out how bad the sludge is.Hope it sorts itself out

Update:
the sludge issue was not too bad(or so I'm told).
new pick up pipe was not required, just cleaned out. Garage say engine looked fine and probably had been serviced regularly( just the one time went over probably as it went into trade before i
bought it).

There is definitely a significant oil burning issue as the low oil level light came in on way. As it was being replaced oil wasn't topped then , but would have needed to. Has done 700 miles since original oil change, so if it required 500mls i suppose it falls within the Audi quoted limits. Sadly it did go from overfilled sump to minimum level in 700 miles.
There is some oil seen around the turbo pipes. Garage suggested if I wanted to investigate oil use, they would steam clean engine/turbo/pipes and reassess.

For now(to limit expenses) I thought I would top up as needed and measure exact amount of oil consumed.

Good news hope this has done it but oil use needs watching.Is there any blue smoke still?If not you may have a leak.Dont let it drop to min but top up little and often.If it stays within limits and doesn't worsen it is best just to monitor and not throw money at it

Thats the conclusion I came to.
There is no more blue smoke.
Smoke sometimes a little heavier than expected been hot and idling but nothing like previous.

I have the recommended 5w30 edge now, but is it on to top up with 5w40 TQX?
also is any oil better at reducing the burning problem?

Its not unusual to have alittle smoke if you rev a hot engine that has been idling but not ideal and oil use will now tell you if there is a ny concern.Oils are much the same but best not to mix them that's why we avoid longlife.I would plan an early change to a cheaper one if you have to top up regularly.Again the QX seems good wifes Bora V5 175k has now gone over 1k without a topup although it has dropped a fraction

Hi all

I have been topping up the oil once a week, usage is about 1l every 700 miles- so it is worsening slowly- still no visible leak.
the problem is can now clearly smell burning oil in the car when the heater is on.
Still same level of smoke and worse when revving hot engine.
i read something about changing pcv valve and breather hose- is this expected to improve things?
How easy it it ?
cts and thermostat was the biggest job I ever did on a car but don't mind putting the time in

THe breather system on these does clog up and the hoses collapse easily .The S3 has had a complete clean and polypipes fitted to help it breath better

Is there any way if testing if it is the pcv valve or a blocked hose or both, before I start pulling bits apart.
I definitely have suction on the oil cap when engine is running, and can't see any leaks in breather system or crankshaft of kinks, so wondered if I could manage just a partial replacement.

I thought I would provide an update as thins are a little clearer.
It might help other with similar problems

I opened up the PCV valve and found oil in it and it wasn't moving freely- as I haven't yet bought any parts I cleaned it out- ws working fine- air blowed in one direction only
Incidently the one time hose clamp had previously been replaced with a jubilee clamp- so assume tackled before.
I opened up breather elbow from oil cooler and it was blocked with emulsified sludge- I couldn't disconnect from rubber T as I couldn't t one time clamp off and hadn't bought replacement so I cleaned what I could with pipe cleaner tube.
There was a lot of oil on surface below PCV hoses and around dipstick seal
Put it all back for now and cabin burning smell gone
Oil cap will dance around due to blowby but no longer sucked down.
Also- exhaust smoking resolved and appears to drive better with more throttle response.
Hopefully will also (partly) address oil consumption issue- only done 50 miles since yet
Early indication is fuel economy has improved

All in all- positive
Cant think what I would have done without he forum advice
