Just before I was going to drain some oil out, I had a 100 mile motorway trip to do. Having returned the oil level has reduced down to the maximum (ie the ridged area just above the hashed area).
There is an improvement- less smoke.

It hasn't totally cleared, so of not doesn't go entirely back to how it was before the oil change, I will take the MAF route.

I had a look in the manual and it says up to 0.5litres per 1000km is normal- I suppose I now need to monitor to see how much oil.
Still, I can live with topping the oil up once I a while, just hoping its standard burn assoc with this engine and not something major

If we go back to the origin of the problem and the (now proven correct) theory that there was probably an additive in the oil, are these additives recommended?
    If so , which one.

I hve prev used lucas in my power steering and it has reduced a leak by 90%- I know they make a stop smoke formula too.

I'd strongly advise you to put nothing but the correct grade of oil from a reputable maker like Quantum in your engine. These are prone to sludging and adding things to thicken the oil can only reduce the life of your engine. Take an afternoon and remove the sump and pickup etc and give them a good clean.

Using a noticeable amount of oil in 100 mls is not good. The handbook figure is not what I would be happy with.My sons S3 with 120k uses a lot less so does my 2.5tdi and my wifes Bora V5 175k is no worse. You need to monitor this to make sure is not getting worse and sort the pipe out asap.

I have had the car checked by a garage. They said no obvious oil leak.
I got a fair quote for the sump clean and pickup pipe change, but couldn't leave the car for the whole day so have to find another day when i can manage without the car.

No more smoking(yippee); and not yet needed to top up oil.

Thr mechanic did say I could also have 3 oil changes done, one every 1000 miles, with engine flush each time and that would be good enough to clear sludge too.

Any thoughts? Is this method as good as dropping the sump and cleaning out?

If you had seen what I did when the S3 sump was dropped you wouldn't listen to this mechanic. How would he know if the sludge had gone unless he then dropped the sump?Just nonsense.

The car is going in tomorrow for the pickup pipe job. I have for some castrol edge 5w30 to go in after.
Is it ok to use longlife oil (quantum 3 longlife) if intending to do frequent changes (every 5000miles). I assume the long life oil is ok on regular servicing just not the other way around(standard oil for longlife intervals)?

Quantum 5W30 is fine for fixed service interval and 5k is very good for any engine. Longlife oils can be expensive
