Hi to all who read this

I have started to see blue smoke, mostly at idle(with both cold or hot engine), and it only started 2 days after having an oil change.

The car had poor service record and was last serviced 14 months/8000 miles ago ( I just bought the car recently), so I figured it would be prudent to get the oil changed.

I used 5w40 from ECP- they had an offer on their triple qx brand.
The mechanic did say only about 3l came out and it was thick. Was filled with 3.8 l, and he did say there was some spillage when changing the filter so may have some oil spots on road overnight.

True next day a few drops and a burning smell when hot but no blue smoke. Oil was just below max so I topped it up and it is about 2mm above max.
Since the 2nd day faster oil change I have blue smoke from exhaust.
No loss of power and runs fine.
Engine smooth and quieter than before

I can't see any leaks and no more oil on the road.

Could I have overfilled? Will it clear? Could it just be spillage related? Should I remove some oil?

Or has the new oil dislodged some sludge and caused a bigger issue?

All opinions would be much appreciated.

This must be coincidence cos oil change shouldn't affect the internals.Possibly the seller had put something in to mask the oil burning but you wont know until you wait a bit longer. If it doesn't clear I would think about the pick up pipe issue with this engine. If it has been poorly serviced and has a reasonable mileage it is important to sort this anyway which involves dropping the sump.I have seen this done on an 1.8T on an S3 which had been on longlife servicing and helped clear out the gunge too

82k miles, so worth investing in it.
How long should it be left before opening up sump?

If you think its been neglected for sometime I would get it sorted asap but it may not be the cause of the smoke which would be of equal concern if it persists and may point to other problems.82k is not big so it should be OK unless its been illtreated. The S3 had done 110k and is still sound so the pipe was done in time

The oil in those cars is quite thin even when cold. I'm with the OP I think additives may have been added. Pull off the sump anyway as these engines can sludge up.

    Update
The smoke has now turned more white.
Its only there during idle when hot(ie not at first starting and not noticeable when driving)
I have been checking oil an coolant- no coolant loss, and nice and bright pink
Oil level is more like 5mm above the maximum mark( I prev said 2mm)- does this change anything, ie do I need to remove some?
There is still oil visible on the black surface that sits below the oil cooler. Not dripping overnight, so Im assuming its same oil that was spilled when changing filter.

On scanning I am getting MAF and O2 Sensor codes
Could this spilt oil be getting into the exhaust system?
Sorry if its a stupid question- what is that surface under the oil cooler(I just worked out that one)

You've overfilled the sump. Drain off till just below the max. Try again and should be much better.

5mm isn't that much .The blue smoke may have been oil burning off the exhaust but the white is more water vapour possibly the MAF failure but depends on quantity .Disconnect the Maf and see if makes any difference
