Hi, just about to take the plunge and treat myself to an Audi A4.

However I can't quite decide which engine to go for. Have looked at the 1.9 and the 2.5. I like the idea of the extra power of the 2.5 but a bit concerned with the running costs. For instance what mpg can I expect? I know what it says in the manual but that can differ to reality!

Also their are 2 cars that i like the look of. Both the same year 2003 but one has is the sline and looks better. It is also a £1000 cheaper. On the down side it has done 71,000 miles! The other has done 56,000.

Is 71,000 high for this car and year and how mny miles can I expect these cars to run too?

Any help to help me make up my mind would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Mike

I don't think the miage is an issue, 71,000 is low by TDI standards.

As for engine choice, I'd go for the 1.9 as it employs newer technology and obviously will be more efficient, simpler and easier to maintain.

If you are worried about power, then the 1.9 PD TDI's in 130bhp standard flavour can easily and safely be tuned (via a remap) up to a similar power output of the V6. The best bit though once tuned is that if driven normally a 1.9 will provide better economy / efficiency than standard.

If it's any help, the 2.5tdi lump in my A6 has done just under 260k and is still sound and has had no major problems so far. Hydraulic lifters, air flow meter(the old favourite) and a set of injectors have been replaced, nothing unusual, minor oil leakage that is expected but repairable and negligable oil usage as a result. Is that any help?

Indeed it is of help That's really impressive.

I may be leaning towards the 1.9 just because of full consumption seems a lot better, unless it's not as bad as I imagine in the 2.5. I have never owned a deisel so not sure what to expect.

What mpg are people getting in heir 2.5s

I've got a 2.5 tdi, 180 Bhp version and I'm getting about 37 mpg. Its a manual so will be a bit better than auto box. That's doing approx 100 miles a day both city and A roads/dual carriageways. Not hanging about either. Not speeding mind, just getting there damn quick.

My 2.5 TDi Tip Auto (ZF) has done 70.000 miles now, and just had the timing belt, ancilliary belt etc changed. I get an average of 38 mpg, and that includes around 10% of mileage towing 1300kgs of caravan around UK & France. Oil consumption is around 1 ltr per 10K miles. Neither of us smokes!
    Regards Bobcat.

I have a 2.5tdi quattro auto remapped to 233bhp. I get about 30-35 mpg, but can get 45mpg on a good run. 1.9tdi is obviously more economical, but doesnt sound as nice and is a bit common !

oh yeah, and just approaching 100k miles with no issues.

Hi, Just go for the best you can afford, the 1.9 will be more economical etc. But either one you can have remapped for better fuel economy, with the bonus of more bhp/torque and with the tip/auto will make it drive better at low speed...

    Hi,

I'm interested to read that you've remapped to 233bhp.

I've been told that the fuel pump on the 180bhp 2.5 is pretty much at tollerance (i.e. just safely within it's opperating capacity) as standard.

Did you have your fuel pump uprated when you had the remap?

    Cheers
    Al.
