Hello. I'm new to this site so please be gentle - especially if I ask any stupid questions.

I've got several things to sort on my Passat (1999 Saloon 1.9 TDi) including aerial, front struts and anti-roll bar links - all of which there is lots of good info on hear already about

What I can't find anything about is regarding the fault I'm having with my electric wing mirrors. When I select either the drivers mirror or the passenger mirror to adjust it, both mirrors move at the same time. I think it's likely to be the switch as if both mirrors are moving then they have power and the motors work. Is there a relay that could be faulty or is this likely to be a cross wire (I had the drivers side window mechanism repaired a few years ago and the garage could have perhaps disturbed something)? If it is the switch then is there any advice on the strip down and replacement of the door card as I always try to take more care inside the car - one knackered fastening can mean you've got an annoying squeak whilst you drive...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

    Chris

    It's supposed to do this.

Passenger mirror should move independently, then driver's and passenger's together, so that you can adjust both at the same time.
Nothing to see here, move along..

Don't worry Hangstone, I don't understand the point of this feature. It really grinds my gears, it is possible to adjust them both independently as sometimes it does this with a bit of fiddling, but I couldn't give the steps to accomplish this!

Cheers guys, have finally got my mirrors adjusted exactly as I wanted (and sorted my aerial out - who of guessed it needed it's own power source... not me).

Are you sure that your switch isnt faulty too? My switch only operated the left mirror whether I selected left or right, so I stripped the switch down and cleaned it up and it works independantly now (left for left, and right for right)

Mine is a three position switch and what Hex says is correct. R = Right this adjusts both left and right, IMHO a brilliant feature, if Mrs QV gets in the car (only 5'2" as oppose to my 5'11") she adjusts both door mirrors in one simple task. The middle position heats the mirrors but does not allow adjustment. The lower position allows you to set the LH mirror independently which I did when I bought the car two and a half years ago

I have a VW Passat with the same wing mirrors, but the passenger unit seems to have moved more away from the car over time.
So much that even if i adjust the mirror to face the most it can go towards the car it isnt enough.
Does anyone know if there is a way the housing can be adjusted back to its factory default setting so it faces more towards the car door?

If the housing has moved so it's angled outwards, realignment is performed manually. For the passenger side, you need to exit the vehicle, walk round to that door, and push the mirror body back so that the swivelling bit is aligned with the bit bolted to the car.

Misalignment is usually caused by clumsy pedestrians walking into it, inconsiderate drivers parking on pavements leaving insufficient room for pedestrians.
