i know, it does soon add up. so, why not go for a diesel to get the lowest fuel costs. get something without a dpf and you won't have a problem driving it in a city, or stick to something with a smaller petrol engine. you either want economy or power. you can't really have both unless you get a 3 litre twin turbo diesel. now, theres a thought ??

From what im reading, in general modern diesel cars seem to be more troublesome than petrol cars, petrol cars just seem to be just simpler these days - or maybe that too simplistic of a view.

yes and no, and no and yes. the only reliable form of transport is a pushbike. too many emission regulations have made everything too complex and with complex comes unreliable and expensive. i siuppose a 1.8t is more reliable than most diesels, but then most diesels are ok now with just a few problems in the past with the 2.0, but dpf's do not like city driving at all. its a difficult one really, which is why my choice is an old audi 80 that never breaks down and costs nothing to maintain.

    Thanks for your feedback.

I think though based on my mileage and driving style that a petrol is the way to go.

And the 1.8 tsi seems to be relatively reliable, has a bit of poke in it and the auto box seems ok.

However, Chris a6 has me worried now......

i think if you use the search function and look for 'b6 passat' you will find quite a lot. even people like crasher say they are rubbish. if he says something bad about vw then you need to take it seriously.

Ok. But is that in regard to diesels or petrols or both or just the build of the car in general.

The B6 Passat is cursed, look through this section and you'll see what I mean. I haven't owned a B6 Passat nor will I never own a B6 Passat due to the problems documented on here and they're expensive to fix.

Buy a Jetta 1.9 TDI, Golf MK5 underpinnings and the uber reliable 1.9

i am not really into them myself but i think its the car in general. it seems that if it can go wrong it will go wrong and cost at least a million pounds to fix. epb, steering locks, tyre wear, the list is long. do your research before buying, thats all i can say really. sure, plenty of people are happy and love their car but do check. even pm crasher and get his honest opinion. he is more qualified than most to tell yo whether they are a good car or not.
didn't see the above reply but i think that sums them up.
