    Hello,

Im thinking of buying a 2008 Passat, 1.8 TSI, Automatic, High line,72,000 Miles on the clock.
From research on the car im looking at, its not DSG or Multitronic, its just a standard torque converter automatic.

Does anyone have any comments on this car in terms of reliability ?

Anything to look out for ?

Any comments greatly welcome, good bad or in different.

Parking brake motors, starting problems, ignition switches, injectors, oil pump balance shafts, steering locks the list goes on.

I don't think B6 Passats came with conventional auto's .. They were DSG.

I wouldn't buy one after reading all the horror stories on here, ticking time bomb really and pot luck whether you get a good 'un.

    Chris, thanks for the reply.

The gearstick didnt have " DSG" written on it, so I got the VIN number and got the main dealer to do a check on it and they confirmed it was a conventional auto.

Are they really that bad though ? or is the problems your saying only isolated ?

1.8 B6's are auto not DSG, only the Diesel and the V6 are DSG and I'm not 100% about the V6 either,

Reliability wise the VAG automatic ime is a good box, I did 102k np in my 1.9 TDi Superb and it still felt good,

1.8 Engines don't have a lot wrong with them but can also eat oil like the diesels

If it's a TSi it should go like stink but the economy will be 21/33/28 so not good basically

A6 Chris must have got a lemon

Thanks for the reply. From what ive seen the 1.8 tsi Engine seems to be ok and ive heard the auto VAG boxes are decent.

    mmmm, so economy not great

I do about 7000 miles a year, 75% of that would be in start/stop city driving. Will I get murdered on fuel costs with the 1.8 tsi ?

    Why would I go diesel ???? !!!!!!

No need for diesel. I only do 7000 miles a year

And my driving style does not suit a diesel car (dpf's, short runs, city driving etc )
