    Hi guys

I've got a 2006 Passat Sport with a 2.0L BKP Diesel engine which I think has a problem with the lift pump. I'd just pulled up on a friends drive when I suddenly heard a buzzing noise coming from the back of the car. I'd been out and about all day in the car and not heard this earlier. It's most noticeable on idle. I'm pretty sure it's the lift pump as when I turn the ignition on before starting the engine the buzz comes on for a second which is probably the pump priming.

The buzzing noise is very noticeable and I'd describe it like the motor for the refrigeration unit on chilled lorries.

Should I be worried the lift pumps gonna die on me soon and any idea if it's a big job to replace?

    Cheers

    Been there,

It won't stop the car if it's buzzing now and even when it stops it will still run, however the two reasons for changing it are one it will strain the tandem pump and break that eventually and the noise did my ear in in the end as it's a deep bass tone and for whatever reason it gave me bad earache like someone had shouted in my ear close up,, the way to tell if it's the pump or not is to start the car and place your ear on the rear seat drivers side and listen for a whirr, a whirr is ok a hummm in a deep bass tone or nothing at all is not, you should hear a splooosh sort of sound when the key is inserted to position 2 without starting the car,

The pump is best sourced from GSF, ECP etc comes in at just under a ton (£100) and is an easy diy,

    Remove rear seat squab

Lift plastic cover in body floor

    Remove electrical connector

Using a flatblade and a hammer gently knock the sealing ring in an anti clock direction

Lift old pump out by pulling half out and tilting so fuel runs out

Pull the pump out fully and pop it into a bucket to avoid a big spill

Relocate the large rubber gasket around the hole in the body/tank

Drop new pump in making sure the level float is fitted to it (some come with one some don't)

Replace sealing collar and knock it round clockwise this time until it bites and seals securely

    Replace connector and cover

    Put seat back in

One little note, on the GSF pump the fuel guage isn't accurate for whatever reason so £20 of derv can register half a tank etc, just be aware of that before you set off on a long one,
