Just one last question, what kind of a job is this for a DIY man? I will have a crack at as much as I can, but I also know my limitations, but never having done one of these, it looks a bit complex? Thanks.

Did the job and it was just a split CV boot, so, got that changed, packed full of grease and all now good, no clicking or strange noises. Because I caught it early that has saved the day. Sine I did the job on Friday though, the ABS light has come on with the warning triangle illuminated symbol below it also lit up. A few times I have reversed then gone forward and slowly then applied the brakes carefully and I can feel a few 'pulses' of the ABS under the pedal and the lights on the dash go out......but then come back again! I didn't disconnect the sensor or even touch it when doing the job. There was a bit of banging and hammering whilst getting the top suspension bolt out which may have sent shock-waves I guess through the area, but with the banging and crashing over the potholes and speed bumps on the roads these days I wouldn't have thought that would influence? I have done a fault code read on my Ebay sourced reader which, to be fair, is not the most sophisticated device, but has, in fairness, read all the other codes historically and nothing shows. Any ideas how to get rid of these?

Remove the road wheel, disc and shield. Pull the rubber cover back on the sensor and spray with release oil, give it time to soak then use a tight fitting spanner (an adjustable is good) to twist the sensor slightly each way until it twists freely then ease out of the hub. Clean all the rusty metallic particles from the face of it, inspect for damage, if it looks good push it back in, refit the parts and take for a test drive.

Mine was exactly the same after I had the two outer cv gaitors replaced last year, the abs would kick in when braking just before the car came to a standstill. As above, try cleaning the sensor from any metal particles which may have stuck to it. This didn't cure the fault on my car, it turned out the sensor must have pushed out slightly when removing the driveshaft, after they carefully tapped it back in all was well. I've now cured the leak on my car which was the nsr window regulator seal and not the plenum drains, I discarded those silly rubber drains just after I bought the car to prevent that problem!

Ha, no wonder its titled the long version, Polish engineering at its worst, why bother removing the screws from the gearbox flange (without splitting any suspension joints!) and doing a proper job by putting the shaft in a vice in the workshop and cleaning all parts in solvent, when you can bugger your knees up on a concrete garage floor and bodge it!

Cheers guys, as always, sound advice. Did as advised, took the ABS sensor out give it a good clean; I also took the plastic connector apart which is located on the strut, give that a good clean, hey presto, all lights gone out! Its great when you know how!!! Thanks again.

well this weekend i did the plenum cleaning cos i had a small amount of water in drivers footwell after last weeks down pour.

also did the pollen filter seal...vw wanted to charge me £46 for a box of sealing cord that i would only use a metre... fone the Wakefield vw and the parts had some that they would sell me a metre....got there saturday morning 9am and a very nice chap on the parts desk gave it me for free, result......so i bought some oil and filter which was a very good price as well.......

took me about 2 hrs as i cleaned the plastic shield that attaches to the windshield and laid down a small line of window sealent(like they use on windshields) and now no gap...should help i think.....tested it all with a hose pipe and saw no water running inside the pollen filter housing and it came out the bottom of car like a waterfall.....job done me thinks....oh and the plenums was well n trully blocked(did think of removing the one under battery but the one under servo could not be removed as it was attached to a cable).....happy chap now....
