I have a 2002 Passat 2.5 Tdi with 146k on the clock. I know that they are well known for fuel pumps failing at this mileage and im sure that is exactly what is wrong with mine.
I understand that the pump is coded to the ignition system, so my question is, would this stop me fitting a second hand pump unless I want to get it all coded up by a VW dealer?
    Thanks for any help.

Nope, you can fit a 2nd hand injector pump but you will need to know both cars pin codes so it can be programmed to the ECU and immobiliser !

Is the pin code the one on the plastic sticker that comes with the keys and can it be coded via a licensed copy of VCDS/Vagcom

Im sure that I remember its usually not the pump but the controller that needs repairing. This can be removed with the pump in situ and sent away.
    Anyone confirm this?

I will spend the money wisely and send the whole pump to dieselbob for a full rebuild. The pumps are rather strong internally but the timing piston is known to seize in the bore and cause wear to the case. Good rebuilders are pressing a new sleeve in and replace the advance piston with a newer, modified part. With a full pump you will also get a new EDC controller. Had customers with pumps in the past they just repaired the EDC and then shortly after the pump seized mechanically due to water in fuel... At least for your money you get a year warranty and the pump looks like new !

That sounds like wise advice. I will go with that.
    Many Thanks.

The ECD failed on my 2001 AKN last month. Sent it off to 'ECU Testing' for repair and now works fine, car even appears to run and pull stronger than before.
