    Hi,

My cars on the variable service plan and I noticed in the service menu that the oil change and the inspection are not too far apart (approx 2 years). A couple of questions

    1) How does the oil change relate to the interim service (it seems from Audis site that the interim service pretty much covers an inspection (in its literal sense))?
    2) Similar to above, is the inspection service (as MMI menu states) in affect the major service?
    3) If the oil change is the interim service and the inspection the major one, then can i just have the major service (which covers everything the interim one does) when the oil change is due. The idea is to switch to the fixed servicing plan so doing both in one go makes the most logical sense before switching..

It baffles me why the MMI would have the oil change for which I can't find a price on Audi's site and then the Audi site mentions the Interim and Inspection service. The link I have found is below:

Fixed-price servicing < Servicing with Audi < Owners area

Get it all done now, ie oil, oil filter and any other miscellanous filters and then reset your oil change to 10k/1year whichever comes first and leave the inspection interval (air pollen etc) for 17k.

Thanks Chris. But is the inspection in affect the major service, or just an inspection? If i was to walk into an Audi dealer tomorrow and ask for an oil change, would they simply carry out an interim service? And likewise, if I asked for an inspection service, would they carry out the major service. It seems illogical that you could go in for an Oil change and a month later be in for an inspection where the oil is changed again. I'm happy to wait and get both done together. I've seen plenty on here around peoples opinions for / against the interval service plan so decided it's probably wise to switch to the fixed plan as I no longer do high mileage (approx 30 miles a day)

Edit: The main reason for doing both together is so they are in Sync. If i was to go for an oil change and reset the oil change on MMI, it would be 2 years again. If I asked Audi to switch to fixed servicing after an oil change, then it would affect the Inspection service date (potentially push it out longer than it should be)

Interim is oil and oil filter, inspection is indeed a major. Just ask for an inspection (major) and oil change. Then ask for the oil to be set to fixed and the major (inspection) set to ~17k-ish.

My A3 runs on the two intervals and if the inspection is due say 5k after the oil change, I would request the oil not to be done as it wouldn't be viable getting it done again so early.

If they're both due at around the same time, ie <5k between both I get both done and carry on then as normal. Please please for the sake of your engine set the oil to fixed.

If I asked Audi for an oil change (interim), would they do this and switch it to fixed without affecting the next inspection date (which i could keep at 2 yrs / 19K miles)?

Agreed, that no point in oil change so soon if the services are close in proximity which is why I don't really get why Audi would have the oil change in Major service and also Interim service rather than seperating the oil change from the rest (You may as well get it done if it's the same price for Major service (fixed price) regardless of whether you request oil change).

When I bought the car, Audi put in on the variable regime and just stated that as long as I use the correct (long life) oil, car will be fine as designed to run for longer without oil changes. Coming from another brand which had a regimed service every year (oil one year, major the next), I have to admit I was surprised at the variable regimes VW group cars have. I will switch it back to a fixed regime, for peace of mind if not anything else. I've already had to topup the oil a few times anyway since I bought the car.

Yes, the interim can be done and only the oil interval reset without affecting the inspection interval

Longlife kills engines prematurely, search for 'longlife' on here and you'll see what I mean.

Well, I plan on keeping the car for the forseeable future so will switch to fixed servicing and annual oil / filter change. It's been on variable since new. Can anyone recommend any decent Indies in Manchester? I'll take it to Audi for the oil change so they can switch the oil change to 1 year.
