just wondering about this. I have 2011 golf match 140 2.0 tdi. I do mainly short journeys with occasional longer one twice a week. Intending keeping the car a long time and wondered if anyone had had this done and what results. I am not interested in chipping the car to go faster as the engine as it stands is fine, but i think software needs modified if DPF removed. I am in Scotland. Or do you just wait until the DPF needs replaced and then remove it?

I'd be interested in knowing about this as when it does fail I'd like to remove it.

There are tuning companies that do the DPF removal. It isn't just a matter of removing the DPF they write to the ecu to disable the sensors else you will have the MIL light flashing, Google them.

Not recommended as the department of transport consider it illegal, and it's possible in the future will cause MOT failure. You would have been better of buying a petrol Golf

That's a debatable whether if would fail an MOT with the DPF removed as diesels are only tested for smoke not emissions. I used to have an MOT testers manual which you can download but I've lost the link now.

Yes but it is quite possible they'll change the MOT test requirements in the future and you'll end up with all these modded diesels failing the MOT due to a removed DPF. Like what happened recently with airbag and ESP lights etc becoming a failure item, and aftermarket xenons. You're increasing emissions however you look at it, they are fitted for a reason. Its almost as daft as the people who remove AC to improve performance.

There is an article about this in Auto Express, issue 1294, 13-19 November 2013, page 16 and 17. Essentially, because it's a modification, you should inform your insurance company. One or two companies would apparently decline cover.

if the dpf is fitted as a requirement for the vehicle to pass the euro emissions level, then removal of it is illegal. so from 2008, euro 6 iirc, you can't remove a dpf. prior to this most cars didn't need the dpf to meet the relevent euro emissions, so you can remove it. after 2008 your car may still pass an mot as this is only a smoke test that the dpf doesn't affect but it wouldn't pass a proper emissions test.
this is how i interpret the rules.

yeah, basically if you don't like it, get a petrol engined car. it does seem that a lot of people will tell you its fine to remove it as the mot doesn't test for it, but they are the ones charging to remove them.
