My aircon system was regassed some 18 mths ago and as far as i was aware it was working ok

However in Septembers warm spell during slow driving I noticed the coolant temperature went higher than the normal 90 degrees running temperature

and i then realised that the electric cooling fan was not cutting in

I had the car checked by an independant Audi workshop and they confirmed that the fan was faulty and that i had no gas in my system !

I took the black cap off off the topping up valve pressed the schrader valve and got a gust of gas coming out

Do i assume therefore that my system is ok but the lack of serious cooling is due to the failed fan ?

Final question is what is the procedure for replacing the fan

I would appreciate anyones comments and thanks in advance

Which fan do you mean? The aircon fan should cut in as soon as you switch a/c on but the coolant fan is temp controlled. The gas shouldn't come out if you only took the cap off.

    Thanks for the reply

There is only one electric fan on my car , the other one is a vicious fan. It is the electric fan that has gone faulty

As I said the gas is released when i remove the black cap and press the Schrader valve. So this suggests that there is gas in the system

Just really like to know how to remove the faulty fan .

At slow speeds with no fan you'll get little refrigerant condensing out, therefore little cooling, was the aircon hooked up to gauges to check the pressure,it could also be low on pressure,I presume you've got no econ red light on,not familiar with your model but you'll have to way the job up see if its a front end off job or if you can get at it from behind.

Finally got round to removing my AirCon fan
Having fiddled around for 30 mins trying to remove the damn thing i concluded that its impossible !!

the only way to get at it ( other than putting the lock carrier into the service position ) is as follows :

1/ undo the single self tapping screw from the upper most arm of the fan assembly
2/ twist the fan assembly anti clockwise by about 20 degrees. This will release the assembly from the radiator
3/ manouever the assembly so you can get at the cable coming from the motor and snip through it. Perhaps disconnect its plug first from under the power steering filler cover
4 with fiddling you should now be able to rotate the assembly so you can get a spanner on each of the three nuts that hold the motor to its cowl
5/ remove these nuts and seperate the motor from its cowl
6/ remove the motor and cowl as two separate parts

I am waiting for my new assembly to be delivered. I hope the fitment is the reverse of the above pricedure

Last year I replaced the electric fan on my Allroad. If you are not fussed about routing the new cabling as designed, just remove the upper right left cambelt cover and you have enough room to seat the whole unit- no need to remove motor from cowling. Routing the cabling as designed requires the lock carrier in the service position - being picky, I did it this way!
