    Hi, can anyone help me sort my vw polo 1.2 2003 gear stick is very stiff moving sideways, it is fine otherwise ie- going up and down, 1st to 2nd, 3rd to 4th etc. car has 44,000 mls. thanks billy.

    i am not sure if this is cable operated or by rods. if cable, i would suspect the cable is siezed thus making it hard to move. one cable does side to side and one does back n forth.
    Audi 80 tdi avant with 360,000 miles...

    thanks for the speedy reply, they are cable operated. I will try take it off and spray silicone down the inside of cable, everything else feels fine, clutch feels nice etc.

    ok, so first pop the cable off the gearbox. they should just twist and pop off. now see if the gearstick is still stiff. if so its the cable and if its now all loose then its the selector in the gearbox. this happens to sharans when a small bearing gets wet and rusts but is a chep and easy enough job, again, not sure if yours will be the same.
    if the gearstick is still stiff then its either the cable or the actual stick.
    Audi 80 tdi avant with 360,000 miles...
