Bit of an odd one but every now and then I'll have a "ping" sound when starting the car with an airbag light which then goes off about 2 seconds later. No constant lights or fault codes showing? Is it just one of those things? Not too worried because it isn't on all the time but I'm just curious

I had that on mine a few months ago and the airbag light would stop on for a couple of seconds more. I did a VCDS scan all clear and it hasn't come back yet.

There are a few airbag error codes.

Just wait until it reoccurs then have it scanned.

    VAG Error Code: 00588

    Fault Location:
Air-Bag Igniter: Drivers Side (N95) - Resistance too Low/Resistance too High/Lower Limit Exceeded/Upper Limit Exceeded/Short Circuit to Positive/Short Circuit to Earth

    Possible Cause:
    Airbag Warning Light active.

Wiring/Connector(s) from/to Airbag Igniter Driver Side (N95) faulty.
Coil Spring with Slip Ring (F138) faulty.
Airbag Igniter Driver Side (N95) faulty.

    Possible Solutions:
Check Wiring from/to Airbag Igniter Driver Side (N95).
Check Coil Spring with Slip Ring (F138).
Check Airbag Igniter Driver Side (N95).

    Special Notes:
When "Short to positive" or "Short to earth" is found, DO NOT CLEAR THE DTC. This can cause the airbag to deploy. See repair manual for more information.

    VAG Error Code: 00589

    Fault Location:
Air-Bag Igniter: Passenger Side (N131) - Resistance too Low/Resistance too High/Lower Limit Exceeded/Upper Limit Exceeded/Short Circuit to Positive/Short Circuit to Earth

    Possible Cause:
    Airbag Warning Light active.

Wiring/Connector(s) from/to Airbag Igniter Passenger Side (N131) faulty.
Airbag Igniter Passenger Side (N131) faulty.

    Possible Solutions:
Check Wiring from/to Airbag Igniter Passenger Side (N131).
Check Airbag Igniter Passenger Side (N131).

    Special Notes:
When "Short to positive" or "Short to earth" is found, DO NOT CLEAR THE DTC. This can cause the airbag to deploy. See repair manual for more information.

As taken from my EOBD II Error Codes

What should be done if you can't clear the codes?

It says See repair manual for more information but there is none available apart from ElsaWin so take it to a dealer for investigation.

Is it the same as this - Audi A1 8X - Zeigertest, Zeigerwischen, Inszenierung aktivieren mit VCDS - YouTube ?
Just means the passenger airbag is enabled, but I don't understand why some cars do it and others don't

Exactly that apart from it only does it occasionally and it doesn't come up in the centre as text. But it is that noise at that time.

Did you ever find a solution to this OP?

My Golf has began beeping at startup and I can't work out why. No error lights on the dash and it doesn't seem to be temperature or airbag related like I first suspected. Vehicle status screen in the MFD does not show any problems either.

edit : turned out to be the tyre pressure warning. Dash light just wasn't coming on for some reason
