It's time to replace all 4 tyres on my Bora.

The current 205/55/16 W Pirelli P6000's, probably factory fit, have been reasonable in the dry but have fluffy traction and grip in the wet.

Yokahama has always been my previous choice for past Golf GTI's and Corrado G60 and they always seemed to transform the feel of the vehicle for the better. Although warned that Yokahama tyre life wouldn't be good I've never found this a huge issue.

Can anyone share experiences / suggestions please?

    The p6000's are factory fitted....

I was looking at replacing all 4 tyres for mine (like for like) but for what i quoted for a set of new tyres, i could get new alloys with tyres....

In the end i spent £600 on a set of RS8 alloy wheels fitted with (and balanced) 225-40 R18 TOYO proxes T1-s performance tyres.

These hold the road very well in the wet, and stick like glue inn the dry.

The T1-s have since been supereseded by the T1-R..... This is supposed to be an enhanced version, and thus even better in the wet.

    Thanks for that Nick.

Amazing how much rubber can cost then relatively so little extra added for 4 bits of alloy engineering as part of the package.

With the promise of better performance in the wet the Toyo's sound just about right for me.

    Who makes the RS8's?

Did you find your deal on the net and if so, any chance of a link?

    Roger.

I got them from the place itself which is a little cheaper, but i'm sure someone close to you will have a similar deal.

I bought mine from wheel base: http://www.wheel-base.co.uk/search_f...&submit=Search

The ones at the bottom on the right.... They look better in real life than on that picture though.

Let us know what you decide on doing....

    Ah Ha!

An 0161 telephone code. A blast across to Chadderton from Leeds for pick-up is a great excuse to bin my work for an afternoon - and it's always nice to see the whites of the eyes of those taking your cash.

Thanks again for the info. I'll let you know what I end up doing.

    Roger.

Hi, I work for for Goodyear Dunlop tyres (don't worry, no plugging!!) if you're after better wet grip you need a directional tread pattern and a softer compound, the trouble is this can be noisier in the dry and the tyres won't last as long. Golfs/Boras tend to have good sound deadening so road noise shouldn't be much of an issue. My last car was a Focus and found the Dunlop SP9000 really good in the wet, but I don't know if they're made in your size. My other reccomendation would be Michelin, you will not get a tyre that lasts longer and they're a good alrounder too. Pricey though!

Hmmm. Interesting you should mention Dunlop JohnWithAGolf. 'Cos, in amongst all the careful and rational consideration, there's my emotional connection with Dunlop tyres.

I was born and brought up in Yardley in Brum, with most of my family working for Rover, Land Rover or Triumph Motorcycles. Air displays in the '50's with early jets at Castle Bromwich meant a very exciting trip for a kid, on the bus, past Fort Dunlop. (Never did see any damn soldiers regardless of what 'me Dad said!) An now I still find myself a stalwart fan of Sylvain Guintoli in Moto GP (regardless of the somewhat overwhelming talent of Rossi, Stoner etc) - and it's just because he rides for Dunlop Yamaha - on a bright, Dunlop-yellow bike. Pathetic eh?

HOWEVER, the SP9000's are available in my size AND available as a good deal, wheel/tyre package from the place in Manchester that Nick recommended earlier in this thread.

Even more to think about then - time to go for a beer methinks.

    Many thanks.

    Roger

It's funny how you can have an emotional connection, I thought I was in the monority! I remember cheering on Jon Reynolds on the Rizla Suzuki in the BSB when he was on Dunlops. Our involvement in the BTCC's good too (do you want any tickets?) Plus I driver past Spitfire island and the Jaguar factory everyday on my way into work, a nice (if not small) sense of national pride.

Hopefully the tyres prove to be good for you, another one to look out for would be the SP9000's successor, the SPMaxx. Have a look at the Dunlop website, driversknow.co.uk.

There's the sales pitch over, let meknow how you get on.
