    Hi chaps,

I have a question I cannot get an answer too, I started a new job a month ago and have been using LOADS of diesel in my 2004 Passat 1.9TDi AWX. So I thought to myself "how can I decrease the cost?"...I considered red diesel, well I considered "legalizing" it but after some research I see you cannot EVER legalize it so thats a no-no. So next after doing more research on different oils etc such as heating oils and veggie oils it seems some can be used in diesel engines.

Now my problem is, I cant find out what can be used in my PD engine. VW originally said Biodiesel at certain mixes etc is ok, then they retracted that statement and now say no veggie/biodiesel at all can be used. Has anyone used a mix of veggie oil and diesel? heating oil and diesel? biodiesel and diesel? in their PD engine?

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks, Ben

When was the car last serviced? I suggest maybe taking a look at your driving style too?

Im an AA guy A6Chris so both are upto scratch believe me! its not a problem with the car, or driving style, its the mileage im covering, so im trying to find a viable alternative to straight 100% diesel, I understand its the "PD" thats the main inhibitor to using bio oils etc I would just like real world experience instead of reading hundreds of posts such as "my friends mate says" or "im guessing" etc

Ah it's down to mileage I see. I do 33k a year so I know your pain!

I think Zollaf on the forum uses some sort of chip oil (I'll check this) in this old audi 80, I think its pre-PD tho so could be different but I'll check anyway. Did you so a quick search and the suggested threads just below my reply?

i do indeed run my old 80 on chip fat and thats a rotary pump. the pd will also run on veg oil quite happily. i look after 3 or 4 that are converted using an elsbett kit. the oil needs to be heated using a heat exchanger and the ecu is remapped as well as other small mods like a better electric lift pump. as for running without a conversion, i wouldn't recommend it personally. maybe 10 % would be ok but the intank pumps don't like it, thats why they get replaced in the conversion.
legally you can use 2500 litres of veg and not have to declare it or pay tax. use red, heating oil jet fuel, black diesel or anything else that will work and you face a hefty fine and possibly the loss of your vehicle when you get caught, so not worth the risk.
if you want to make the veg into bio then that will also work and be legal and the pd will run that without problem.
Audi 80 tdi avant with 360,000 miles...

thanks zollaf, well it seems biodiesel is the only option for my PD system, however from what I see it may be just as expensive now as normal Derv, which is a shock, Ill search for a reputable cheap supplier that isnt milking the bio boom like the big guns and then maybe itll be worth it

I'm getting 75 boring miles to the gallon in a diesel Corsa. Don't be tempted to use agri diesel and kerosene is not only illegal but it's "dry" and will ruin your engine. If you don't need massive power Polo Fabia 1.4 TDi returns huge MPG
