    Hi

I am very interested in buying a 2002 VW Passat tdi 130 Sport with 80,000 miles. I have driven a colleague's car and was very impressed by it. Are there any problems I should look out for before I go ahead and buy it? I am a bit concerned that the mileage is quite high. Please advise!

Sorry fopr the late reply, I have been busy. I brought a 2002 130TDI Sport in January. It came with three months warranty. I had a leaky radiator replaced within 2 weeks and 4 weeks later the gearbox started to whine . The dealer I brought it from had the gearbox repaired at a specialist, a couple of bearings were badly worn, however the car has a towbar fitted so the prevuois owner used it for towing so that might have had some bearing (excuse the pun) on the bearing.
The car has just had it 110,000 mile service. The garage (non VW) carried it out to manufacturers standards, couldnt find anything wrong and said it was in good condition. Total Charge for the service £65 inc VAT.
With the two expections mentioned in my 1st paragraph the car has been reilable, comfortable and sips diesel unless I decide to boot it, but from my experiance repair costs can be expensive. For VW to have repaired to the gearbox would have been in excess of £800.00 and a new gearbox is well over 2K. A new clutch would cost somewhere around £400 - £500 (had mine done at cost when they did the gearbox).
I love the car, I enjoy driving it and love the power & flexibity, its possible the best car I have ever owned: I just keep my fingers crossed that when something goes wrong it will not be an expensive part but with sods law beibg sod's law....................

    Thanks for the info

The car I had in mind has just been sold. However, I am going tonight to look at an '01 Tdi Sport with 90000 miles. It has full service history and has had a new timing belt fitted. Apparently it was an ex-fleet car so every repair has been listed. I'll let you know how I get on

Well I went and bought an '01 tdi Sport with full service history. The car is everything I imagined and more. However, there are a couple of wee niggles. Sometimes when I lock unlock the car the rear passenger door lock does not operate, with the key or the fob. When this happens the electric window does not operate either. I checked the fuses but neithe one is blown and I suppose if they were the window would not operate at all. Have you any ideas?

The other question I have concerns the service book. The car was last serviced at 82k and as the car has now done 91k it is due another service. However, there are no spaces left on the service book. Is it possible to get another book to continue getting stamps? I would prefer not to go to a main VW dealer as I'm sure it will probably cost me an arm and a leg!!!

I would be very grateful for any suggestions!!!!!

ps. One other thing. The onboard computer is convinced that I am only averaging 30mpg and I'm sure this is not right. How accurate is the computer likely to be?
