Bring the window down and you will see in between the black rails an inner pin and outer sleeve. They are white and you need to push both of them in without breaking the glass. You may have to use a pin punch. Then you can feel if the window is separated from the interior. I am at this point but I cannot do the next step - actually unlock the door!!!

Remove the rear bottom seats to make it easier to slide the inner metal panel down and forwards to get it out.

Thanks will give that a go. Let me know if you manage to get the door open! Clearly this is a bit of a problem and will no doubt be become more so as the motors fail through age. The dealers mechanics are very vague too. Im suspicious and think that they prob have some way of overiding the c. locking via computer? Just a theory. Cheers.

This seems a common problem, with no solution :-(

I have the same.. drivers side rear door is locked shut.. how do you replace the lock without taking an angle-grinder / crow-bar to the door!?!?!?

this seems like a rediculous design-flaw...

Me too - mine is a golf sdi 2003. The central locking is "manual" - ie just operated from the driver and front passenger doors - as opposed to from a remote control fob.

The drivers side rear passenger lock is on its way out - usually takes 3 or 4 attempts to make the button go up or down.

Will this model have the "motor" refered to as well

Any ideas for a fix ?

Last Sunday, I had a final go at trying to free up this lock as the next step was going to cost me money

Having unscrewed the door panel to get a sight of the lock mechanism I sprayed all over the lock inside with WD40 and left it for an hour. I had also done this the night before and left it.
I got the missus to operate the remote on the keyfob continuously whilst i had one hand on the top button and its wire connector directly to the lock pulling it up and down and my other hand on the proper door opening lever. Together we operated all three for 20 secs or so and TO MY SURPRISE AND REFIEF....the door opened. WOOOOHHHOOOOO
My dilema then of course was wondering what would happen if i closed it and tried again. I severley lubricated the lock inside out upside down with WD 40 and locked to door and unlocked it continuously with it in the open position. It seemed to work each time or at least the button moved up and down as it should. I then tried closing the door properly ,locking it and then unlocking it.
WOOOOOHHHHHHOOOOO again. It worked faultlessly. Tried it over and over....no probs. I put the whole door back together and it still worked and ......it hasn;t stopped working since.

Hopefully this issue will not return anytime soon. My luck just turned i suppose. Shouldn't have happened in the first place though.
