When I switch ignition on, on my 1998 1.9tdi passat, tha climatronic display flashes for approx 10secs. The owners hand book says "contact a VW dealer", why? is this a problem that can't be resolved with DIY or do VW dealers really need the funds?

The flashing display indicates that there is a fault with the system.

    You have two options;

1, Search online for info on how to interogate the clima unit itself to retrieve the fault stored in it.

    or

2, Get it read for faults by someone off here with vagcom (look in the vagcom sub forum) and/ or a local garage and / or VW themselves as the book says.

My guess would be the fault is going to be a faulty V71 air flap control motor, very very common.

Bog Col,,,,,,,, would a V71 airflap control motor stop my car firing???
after oil change last week my cars never moved, the engine turns but does not fire, I looked at the oil level today and the max level is exceeded by about 10 - 12 mm, could this stop the engine firing????
clutching at straws but any help appreciated

No, it should be fine. Whilst not ideal, to high an oil level shouldn't stop it running.

Climatronic display update..More info, The heater motor is not running, discovered fuse had blown. Changed fuse and fan motor ran for about 10 seconds berfore stopping, changed fuse again fan ran for about 10 seconds before again stopping.
Any ideas for bits to check, could it be motor brushes? is there a temp cut off?

Would taking the car and putting on a dealer's computer show the problem or would it basically say you've got a blown fuse?????
Does it tell you why or where the problem is????

I'd turn my attention to the fan resistor pack.

Have you looked on here yet for anyone who can read the car for faults ?

Look in the vagcom sub forum

    Update so far
Finally bit the bullit and took car to a local garage which specialised in electrical problems, Fault turned out not to be electrical but a broken air con compressor, (approx cost to fix - just short of £500), he did however remove the relay which came in when the heater fan started and was blowing the fuses so I am now able to clear my windscreen and have heat in the car but when summer comes I wont have aircon (until I repair it). total cost so far £20:51 for diagnostics (pretty good eh!.)
PS : thanks to Big Col for all his help, which without I would still be looking in the fusebox.
