On both cars I hear both turbos whistling, spooling and dying off when off the throttle ever since day 1 of ownership.

if you had a split pipe you would have no or little boost and limp mode from memory. only when it starts whining like a police siren is when you start to worry

Saying that, I can only hear it on my A6 with the windows down.

Can hear the A3s more due to it being a noisy PD.

On my A6 I can note it if I listen very very carefully when driving with windows up and music not on and with windows down I notice it more but compared with my VAG TDi vans I've got to say it really is quieter ...

IMO the 2008 2.5 TDi common rail did more turbo spool noise than my 2012 2.0 TDi common rail, when I compare the 2005 A6 3.0 TDi common rail to them it is so much more refined ...

More often I hear the dying off after releasing throttle than any operational noise of turbo ...

Differing engines do have differing turbos ...

Don't hear much really on mine. As gupsterg said, only hear it with windows down backing off the throttle and no System Of A Down playing on the stereo! Needless to say the combination of those things happening are rare lol.

I have heard quite prominent whooshing etc on other older turbo diesels, so the sounds you hear are not out of the ordinary. But maybe worth having it checked out just to be sure

hmmm, doesn't sound anything like that, just a whoosh on gear change, a bit like a dump valve.

A local taxi driver with a passat tdi and a whining turbo seemed to think that it's bearings were on the way out.

    What engine do you have???

There was a TPI issued about this concern on all PD engines.......not a problem apparently..

Technical product information Transaction No.: 2006406/8
Noises from boost air system on 4 cylinder TDI Release date: 10-Jun-2008

    Customer statement / workshop findings
On vehicles with 4 cylinder pump injector engine a flowing noise is created in the boost air system when releasing the accelerator or at load change when disengaging the clutch.

    Technical background
The noise is caused by structural tolerances (e.g. impeller fan). More than 2 bars of boost pressure cannot be noiselessly controlled as this leads to slight pressure fluctuations, which, depending on the tolerances, can lead to noises on parts in the boost air system. But because of different frequency superimposition the noise cannot be reproduced on all vehicles. The noise is normal and doesn’t affect the service life of the turbo charger.

    Production change
    ---

    Measure
Do not replace any parts as this doesn’t improve the situation.

    Customer information
When accelerating the maximum boost pressure is reached just above 2000 rpm. If the engine speed drops after releasing the accelerator, the drawn-in air accumulates and flows back. The resulting quiet flowing noise can only be heard briefly and is no technical complaint in the sense of warranty. It is a normal condition on all vehicles with 4 cylinder pump injector engine.
