Reversing Light Fault

Hello, was told by a colleague of mine that my right reversing light wasn't working, so took it to Halfords and had it replaced but for some reason it still wouldn't work with the new bulb in. Halfords manager said that by law you only need 1 reversing light and that it could be a fault with the holder so left it at that. Since then my vehicle check tells me that the right rear fog light is not working (same side as the faulty reversing light) so I took off the lamp holder and checked all the bulbs to see if any are fused but all being well I just tightened the bulbs thinking they could be loose. But the problem persists. I cant even tell which one is the fog lamp as the bulbs look similar and a bit difficult to tell during day light. Any suggestions? cheers

What year and do you have Xenons fitted?

Its an A6 2.7 tdi 2007 don't know if they have Xenons thought those were only meant for the headlights and not the back lights apologies for ignorance

Saloon or avant?

Cars with Xenons on Saloons anyway, will have one reversing light on the left hand side, and a fog light on the right hand side.

Non-xenon cars will have 2x reverse and 2x fog on Saloons.

Avants have x2 reverse and x2 fogs regardless of xenons iirc.

I may be totally wrong (not unknown) but doesn't it have 1 reversing lite as standard with the other side working as 'fog lite'?

Hi Chris mines a saloon so that sorts out the right hand side reversing light but now the system shows a fault with the right fog light.

Check the contact for the rear fog light and the bulb itself, on my car with rear highline clusters it has a weird rear fog light bulb, its the shape of wine bottle with both sides pointing in at the top.

I'll go grab a pic.

Hi Whippy, that's what Chris has said the reversing is on the left while fog light on the right so you are right there mate

From the below pics you can see the difference in the fog light bulb as the cluster itself has a metal block in it to stop the light reflecting into the space reserved for the reverse light, this inturn reflects the light DOWN into the new position.

Just noticed these clusters are too steaming up, they're only new a couple of months ago from Audi!

Could you take a pic of your cluster just so we know were definitely talking about the highline ones?
