I have a 1998, S reg, 110BHP, Tdi, VW passat saloon. Until recently the car locked fine & operated fine, until the beginning of the week. On locking (and today on opening aswell) the car from the driver's side door the car refuses to lock, the indicators flash twice (well at least once), and then all the windows open fully. I can get the vehicle to lock unless i lock it through the boot, without a repeat performance. i have tried it quickly, slowly to no avail & you can imaginie its beginning to pee me off a little. the battery did go almost flat about 10 days ago, due to working in bahrain for 2.5 months with work. but after an overnight charge it worked a treat. Any ideas?

the battery in my key fob doesn`t work, as i think the battery is knacked, and i'm too tight to pay the 80/90 quid for another one from a vw main dealer

i have a '97 1.6 s and i have had the same problem.my car doesnt have the microwave alarm system, you have to look the doors manually but has central locking.its the drivers side door lock mechanism that has failed on my car.before it packed up it worked intermitantly, sometimes it would open, and sometimes it wouldnt lock and then it would lock the door but open all the electic windows!!.the door locking mechanism comes as complete pack on my car that you just take out and replace(and its a fairly involved job),and on some cars you have a different barrel arrangement, but mine is the rod that comes from the door handle lock that has a flat on the end that locates into a white 'T' slot, and thats what wears out and eventualy stops the door lock from operating properly. Its going to cost me the best part of 150 quid to get it replaced from VW,i thought of going to a specialist breaker but no saying you get something any beter than what you have so its going to have be a new one.at the moment i have to open the car from the passenger side, which is a right pain!.VW knows its a common fault and stocks the lock on the shelf which is handy.
