    Hi all

I have a 2007 Passat estate 2.0tdi S DSG with 79,000m it was involved in an accident last year with the front nearside wheel and suspension. since then I have never really been happy with the car.

it has just passed its mot with an advisory on 2 new tyres needed soon and a worn near front swinging arm ( though I am in dispute with the insurance company about this)

It is due its 80,000 mile service and a new cambelt, so to my mind that's about £1000 to be spent. I do have some money I could invest in a newer car but when I went to "we buy any car" for a very rough price guide I was shocked to se it was worth under £4,000.

as I was hoping of only putting £6,000 plus my car towards the new car it limits what car I can buy ( I was really hoping to buy either a ford or VAG estate with DSG or Powershift gearbox and was really hoping for a mondeo) and to be honest it doesn't feel like im gaining an awful lot more car in terms of year and mileage.

so I am in 2 minds as to whether to stick with a car that im not really that "interested in" or take the plunge and get a new car that is probably more of a compromise than I hoped for.

Any advise and thoughts are welcome. thanks

get yourself down to some car dealers and see what your car is really worth against another car. webuyanycar do seem to make silly offers and if 10% of people accept then they are quids in. their offer on my 02 plate mazda 323 was £150. i have sold it since for 800 quid .
cars are not selling so dealers will give you a better price to get your business, give it a go, see whats out there you like and if you can't do a deal then keep yours .

as zol says see what a local dealer would buy it off you for.

see whats out there, there are some bargains to be had so go look, if you keep it you could be asking the same question next year too

how reliable has it been in your period of ownership?

Are you expecting too much for your car?

Why I'm saying I had a quick scan of AT ...

Very reasonable one, private sale £5.2K Link:- Volkswagen Passat 2.0 S TDI 5dr DSG Diesel Estate 2007

A bit higher spec and 57 instead of 07 vs above ad with only 10k more miles than yours, private sale £5.2k Link:- Volkswagen Passat 2.0 Sport TDI 5dr DSG Diesel Estate 2007

Here's 3 others for you to consider as competition and they are at dealers so warranty, etc ...

Link:- Volkswagen Passat 2.0 SE TDI 5dr DSG 2007
Link:- Volkswagen Passat 2.0 S TDI 5dr DSG (FULL VW SERVICE HISTORY) 2007
    Link:- Volkswagen Passat 2.0 S TDI 5DR DSG 2008

And there maybe some little shift on price via haggling ...

I'm also thinking the repair by insurance company will show on HPI?

I'm not saying I know exact value of your car but to me £4k seems reasonable, you may get a better deal from a dealer on P/X but I think the accident repair may devalue it ...

Thanks guys the problem with keeping it for another year is the £1k "investment" if I do that I might as well keep the car for a while as there must be a point when the depreciation slows right down. problem is I love the dsg box(and autohold) but don't really want another Passat, would go for an Octavia or maybe a golf but I guess I will have to see what the dealers say.

well not bad apart from the tendancy to hit the kerb side on at 50mph ( or maybe that was me??) both ehbs have gone last year, injectors all replaced last year but I have noticed that if I pull out from a side street quite sharpish I can see a fair bit of black smoke in the rear view mirror too scared to think what that might be!
