    Morning All.

I've just sold my Impreza Wagon and am now looking to upgrade to something a bit bigger/nicer/all-rounder which can tow our track day car, transport a decent furniture/household stuff and also is going to be spacious enough for our frequent camping trips in Wales/Lakes/Cornwall. We are considering looking at an A6 Avant and also a BMW 5-Series Touring - probably up-to-2008 age.

With our £12k budget we started looking at A6 Avant's a while ago before the Subaru went up for sale and spec wise would ideally be looking for an A6 Avant Le Mans (or Quattro equivalent) with the 3.0TDI engine (and the cheaper road tax!). Seem's to be a bit of a nightmare with options when finding one to meet the spec we're looking for. Some are Tip Tronic. Some Multitronic. Some TDV. Some of the A6 Le Mans are 2.7's, some 3.0's.... ARGGHHHH!! And then there are all the factory options, Xenon headlights, Bose stereo, Bluetooth kit, parking sensors...... and so on and so forth!

So yes - any advice/pointers are helpful and also any cars on the forum which are for sale I should have a look at! We've checking Auto Trader, PistonHeads and eBay daily to see what comes up!

    All the best

    Simon

Thanks Chris - I was hoping there would be a sticky without doing all the trawling but I guess not! Shame!

Is there a For Sale board on here or any other recommend places to browse aside from the usual Auto Trader and Pistonheads?

Well I had one in the pipeline but didn't get the responses I needed from other A6 users so that was a no-go unfortunately!

I'm letting it go into the archive now, no point in keep asking but it would've suited you to a tee - ATTN! A6 c6 owners - help me to help you!!

Thanks Chris - apologies - since signing in as a fully fledged forum user the marketplace is now visible! Seem's I wasn't signed in before so couldn't see it

Your link to the brochure the other day for someone in the same boat is really helpful so thanks for the direction on that one. Your saloon A6 looks very smart.

I'll have a dig and post some other threads which should help.

Thanks! It's Night Blue Pearlescent which in the 4 years I've had the car I've only ever seen a small handful in the same colour - pretty unique!

Okay so coming from an Impreza you won't be scared filling it very often. The 3.0 TDI's are thirsty - anything from around 18-24mpg around town and anything from 32-37/8 on a long run. I've seen 41.4mpg on mine a small number of times and MarkTM on the forum has touched 50mpg.

Re gearboxes, a quattro automatic will be tiptronic and any fwd auto will be multitronic. The former is a better, more reliable gearbox as the multitronics can be troublesome with control modules and are expensive to replace. From about 2009 onwards they became significantly better but I still wouldn't trust one personally plus I don't like the way they drive.

You've already seen the brochure for the C6 so that covers most options and what the Le Mans comes with above the S-Line (parking sensors, leather, interior light pack, 19s)

Re road tax, there was a point in around 2006/7 ('07 plates really) where they lowered the Co2 by 1 or 2g/km which put the car into the lower(!) band of £280/year. Some older cars oddly were in the bracket of £480 I think it is.

quattro will chew cheap tyres but will love premium rubber. I have Michelin PS2 (255/35/19) on mine which have just ticked over 37k on the rear, the fronts needed replaced at 32k due to bad alignment on the car but they still had 2mm left. The rears will need done in the next few weeks.

I've had my car since 2009 when it was 1 year old and 33k on the clock. It now has 87k-ish and I recently created a thread here showing running costs - Running Costs .. 2009-Present

Generally go as new as you can afford to avoid any early production issues. My '57 plate has been pretty faultless apart from the odd glowplug and intake manifold runner, there is a fix kit for this however so don't be too worried.

Another common fault is that the rear light clusters tend to steam up but we have posted in a thread here to drill small holes in the inner cluster to aid circulation - https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...t=rear+cluster

Remember there are loads of cars out there, so just keep looking and don't be afraid to travel for the right car. I travelled to Teesside to get mine and drove it 400 miles home where I managed an average MPG of high 20's

Very kind Chris! That Audi brochure link is fantastic for answering spec and trim questions (esp. multitronic or TipTronic) so it's really helped clear up what options are worth getting and which less so. Hugely helpful as for anyone going looking for an A6 you're just overwhelmed with the millions of options!

Your Le Mans is indeed very smart. Personally it's the one colour we've chosen not to look at (too many dark blue cars over the years!) but it's a real good looker.

    The Avant hunt begins!

    You're welcome.

I'll add bits and pieces to that post as I think of them.

Don't be put off by high mileage, they're built for big miles and cope with them well considering they're serviced regularly every year or 10k miles.

Oh btw, remember that intake manifold thing I mentioned above? Well on Audi's they just stick open or closed, but in the 530 and 535d they can in extreme cases fall off and be injested by the engine and cause major damage.

If you're planning on keeping the car any long period of time or consider another VAG in the future I would also suggest getting VCDS which is the diagnostic tool for VAG cars.

It can enable some nifty tricks on the cars and will prove useful if your engine light or something odd comes up on the dash as it will do a detailed code scan.

Expensive, but worth it in my eyes.

Good luck with the search, hope you see that the Audi is a significantly better car than the 5er.
