Headlight clusters - Halogen and HID - are they the same??

Does anyone know if there is an actual difference between the standard headlight cluster and the HID one??... if I wanted to replace one of mine can I just buy a standard unit and transplant my HID and respective components or are these 2 different fittings and part numbers?

Reason is of course price - a standard fitting without all the bells and whistles is a lot cheaper than the fully clad HID one

Yeah mate im not 100% sure of the differences , but i know its actually illegal to fit hid kits to a standard headlights , a little more reserch may throw up a answer

The halogen headlamp doesn't have the projector lens built in so you need a specific xenon unit which does.

They're two different units with different part numbers.

just found out the hid bulbs affect the beam pattern of a concaved headlight so therefore will fail the mot

cheers guys - I should have explained my reason for asking - I have factory Xenons on the S4 but one of the units it a bit damaged at the back (no one can see it but I know it is there) just wanted to see if I could get a normal unit and swap the parts out...

Seems I will either have to live with it or find a good conditioned 2nd hand one
