I wondered about the red line on the rev counter being made up of red LEDs like the fuel and water temp gauges. Seemed a little unnecessary until I noticed today that it actually changes

Started the car and red line set itself at 4600 RPM... as the engine warmed up (which it does QUICKLY) it made its way up to 5200 RPM. Not entirely sure what to make of that...
    - I certainly would not rev the engine to 4600 RPM from cold so it does seem a little pointless, although maybe there are people who would do that. Maybe it also changes the gear shift pattern to prevent over-revving on a cold engine.
    - Or maybe it is showing something else? Oil temp maybe (in an inverse way) - 4600RPM red line = cold oil, 5200RPM = warm?

    Anyone else noticed this?

The red line changes dependant on the engine temp, obviously the car thinks 4600rpm is acceptable when its cold hence the placement of the red line

Then once its warmed up you get the whole 5200rpm. No power that high in the revs anyway on a diesel.

On cars with the basic dash, the redline doesn't change.

I don't rev my car that high anyway, hot or cold!

I keep below 2k. when cold.

your bores will glaze. diesels do that, then they start using oil. mine got honed when i got her at 305k , new rings and a hone and they should still be like new as she does get a pasting from time to time. they need that to keep them fresh. the red line is there for a reason, use it or lose it.

My A6 changes the red bars as well. As it warmed up it increased the rev range.

What options do you tick to get the uprated dash?

I think the S-Line had the better dash, that pic is from an SE.

Or any car with HDD nav I'm guessing, I'm not totally sure.

I think it is determined by whether you have the colour DIS or not.
