    Hello,

Sometime back I had posted of a high revving (without any abnormal increase in rev) noise on my Audi A6 (2.0TDi, 58 Reg) when it is restarted following a long drive. The noise settles down immediately when the engine starts running. Last week I had a health check done at the Audi as I was about to go on a long drive to the Lake Districts (which by the way was fabulous with the car running almost 520 miles on a full tank). The engineers at Audi suspect that the Flywheel (DMF) is the most probable cause and have quoted me £1500 (oouucchhhh!!!) to get it repaired and £550 pounds for the cambelt (which is due for change as well). They said that the noise would eventually increase, however, that hasnt been the case yet. So does anyone think that this needs to be done immediately, as I am kind of almost broke after I have bought the car. Didnt think of such a hefty expenditure so early. ...Ah the joys of private dealer cars!!!!

Can you describe the noise. Is it a wine, rattling, does it sounds like a fan. does it rattle when you pull away at low revs. What, exactly. Regards Peter

No I would not describe it as wine or rattling, It is more like as if you had the accelerator pushed down while starting up, only that the revs dont go up. Audi is pretty much certain that it is the flywheel. However, I am thinking of taking it to an indy to get it checked.

Is the air con turn off. It could be an electric fan firing up. Also check the viscous couple fan is not stiff to turn. I do not think it is the DMF. Regards Peter

yes i have tried it with aircon off and on. I dont know how to find the viscous couple fan. What I will try is I will try to take video to record the sound. Looking through the net I found a video of Passat. The sound is very similar to this:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quUVBkheot8&feature=youtube_gdata_player

although I havent tried checking out if the sound varies in different drive position.

If you have a multitronic box then you do not have a DMF just a damper unit. Please provide engine and gearbox code from the ID label either in the service book or on the ID label in the spare wheel bay. Regards Peter

    Hello Roy

I have the same problem (well it sounds the same!)

When I start the car from cold (generally) it starts ok. When I start from hot it sounds like a bag of nails for a second or two then ticks over normally (ish!)

The dealer has diagnosed DMF failing as has an independant. However this has been happening for 2 years now and it still sounds the same. Having asked the indy what the sequence of events is to failure, he responded "when the car starts to shudder whilst driving, then its time to change it". Sounds fair to me!

Although I have other non-related issues such as a coked up EGR & failing air flap (to be done this weekend), the car still drives well so I'm not changing it!

I also had cause to call out Audi assist not so long ago - he pretty much told me the same story.

It's an expensive change - the best quote I had 2 years ago was £800-900 from the Indy and that was changing the clutch plates at the same time.

Not convinced Peter that you are right about not having a DMF, as mine is a 2007 multitronic too!

    Cheers

    Mark

I will get the ENgine ID once I am home but as Hobb pointed out, I am pretty sure mine is also multitronic one. And Audi would certainly not go wrong on the fact that the car doesn't have DMF.

Thanks for sharing your experience Mark. How many miles has your car done? Mine is just over 60K. As I said I will try making a video for the noise and post it. It would be great if you could do the same as well. From what you have written it does sound the same problem. I have had no problem while driving, accelerates smoothly, although so far I have only driven about 1000 miles on it. At times, with the gear at the Parking position, after starting, I do experience some vibrations but nothing major. I have had such vibrations in my previous Toyota as well.

I pulled the drawings up and the Manual box details a DMF and the Multitronic details a damper plate flywheel. Quite different units. Regards Peter
