Audi A4 - poor MPG

Hi, I have recently purchased a 2007 Audi A4 (B7) 170 S-Line, front wheel drive not Quattro, which is only returning 32.4 MPG. As a diesel I would have expected a higher number than that but also all the literature you get for car suggests that it should be a lot higher also. Can anyone confirm that this is the "real MPG" for this model? I am literally driving 50/50 on city roads and B roads as I live a little out of the town.
Have to admit that I am disappointed if it is and will soon consider getting rid of it.

When was it last serviced including fuel filter etc.

Hi and thanks for the welcome. Car was last serviced in 2012 ( according to book). Dashboard computer informs me that next service is due in 5000 miles or so. You thinking it might just require a freshen up of the filter?
Might explain why it feels heavy/sluggish

Yeah get it changed with genuine parts and see what happens.

Also check with audi and see if your injectors are subject to a free recall - 0800 699 888 or contact your local dealer.

I do a fair amount of miles in mine and it averages around 39 mpg. Mostly I do 150 mile plus journeys.

I think the on board computer is pretty optimistic too so would go on the assumption that you're not getting within 3-5 mpg of what it tells you.

Called the Audi 0800 number to see if it was due a free recall.... They confirmed that it ad Ben in on the 29th October 2012 so rules that out. Have taken the plunge and booked it into Audi for a diagnostic check as it just isn't running right at all.

I have 2.0 170 saloon, but quattro... and returning an average of 39-41mpg.
As mentioned above, change fuel filter, but also clean out build up of carbon from egr valve / inlet manifold.

All these increased my mpg & performance.... before was averaging 32-35mpg.
