    Hello
After a little bit of advice...

I want to upgrade my the sound system in my car as I think nearly all the speakers have started to crackle in my car

To start with I know the size of the components installed but just wanted to know if I am correct in saying the below?

The 6.5" components are subwoofers? Or are they just normal speakers which are enclosed to give it that punch of bass?
The 3" components are just normal mid range speakers? Or would any speakers do (i.e does not necessarily have to be mid range)?
    The 1" components are tweeters?

I am really happy with the sound level of the audio at the moment so don't think I would need to upgrade the amp but really need to upgrade the speakers... I assume I could fit aftermarket components without having to change the OEM amp? I currently have the 10 speaker set up, non-bose.

    Any advice would be great
    Thanks in advanced

I would also like clarification on the above as i want to upgrade my front speakers before fitting my 2 power amps into the system via the speaker level inputs. Gonna post in the Audio section too but if any of you have any recomendations for 120watt + bass speakers and 50watt midbass and tweeters, that would be cool

Thanks for the link . I had a look at the thread earlier and that's where I found all the speaker sizes from, however I don't believe my question is answered in that thread... I was wanting to know what each speakers function is i.e is the two 6.5" speakers in the front doors what acts as the subwoofer? Would I need to by 6.5" subwoofers to fit in the enclosure or would any normal speaker do the same job?

I'm absolutely clueless with the sound system in this car... in the past I have had everything hooked up via RCA's and by splicing into the speaker signals... this car seems a little bit more fiddly than that?

    Thanks again Chris

A few years back I upgraded all of the speakers in my Jag with Kappa Infinity edge driven MMD's and crossovers, no change to amp

A total of 11 speakers inc sub mounted in stock place behind rear seats

Now my car is 17yrs old and at the time my local dealer asked me to sit in and have a listen to mine, then invited me to sit in a new XK with Bowers & Wilkins, we both agreed that my sound was by far the superior.

Appreciate that in many respects they skimp with speakers hidden in doors etc, in the case of my Jag (due to the age) they were made of coated paper...eeek!

Anyone know the max depth subwoofer that will fit?
And in answor to A6H**, the 6.5" has to be a Sub, the middle is a mid/bass as i don't believe it is a true 3 way set up and the 1" has to be a tweeter. Am gonna search for some Kappa Infinity's as i know they are good.

Just been doing some googleing and this would be pretty awesome if they will fit JL Audio 6W3v3 Of course you would need 2 of them though and they are right at the top end of my budget.

Weirdly just googled and saw this

What size speakers fit a 2005 audi a6? - Yahoo! Answers

I've non bose, but if I were adding a sub (or subs) to my saloon I'd almost definately put them in the rear shelf as there seem (from memory) to be precut holes on the metal for these, accessed from the boot. Would be adding a seperate mono amp to power these and leave the currents as is or upgrade just the speakers alone.

Methinks a lot more homework needed though!

Awesome, thanks Mark I have an Avant so rear shelf isn't an option. I am still tempted to build an enclosure inside my spare wheeland fit a sub in there, but still confused how i woul wire up the amp for it, presumably the only way would be to tap into the wires for the existing subs in the front doors, but then would have to get a decent and powerfull amp to cope with the signal drop from running 2 speakers from the single output.

These sound alright Lanzar MAXP64 Max Pro 600W 6.5 inch 4 Ohm Small Enclosure Car Subwoofer:Amazon:Electronics
