I'm getting a little confused as to what I've got in my car and what tax band it ought to be. I know the car is an ASB engine code and is rated at 171kw according to DVLA, which converts to 233bhp (metric, rounded up). What I'm not sure about is that DVLA are rating it as 226g/km on the V5.

According to their site (http://carfueldata.direct.gov.uk/sea...used-cars.aspx) , any car registered before May 2007 can only be a 225. Any car registered from May 2007 onwards can only be a 233. My car seems to think it's a 233 but registered in November 2006. I know my car isn't unique in this respect as there seems to be other 233's for sale that are 2006 vintage. According to their data, all 225's fall into tax band L. All 233's fall into tax band K. If their data is wrong, and cars that are 233's and registered before May 2007 are the same rating as the later ones, we're talking about £200 a year difference in road tax so it's not exactly a small amount.

I'm guessing there's something I'm missing, but if I'm not I feel a call/letter to the DVLA/BBC Watchdog coming on....

Go by the Co2 reading on your V5 as some 3.0 TDis had different Co2 ratings.

read this post onwards for info - https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...137#post804137

The conclusion from that thread seems to be that it's down to Avant vs Saloon, and according to the government data that isn't the case. Checking the link above gives identical readings for saloon and avant with a given month of registration. Interestingly, none of the entries there correspond to the 226g/km that is showing on my V5C either.

I think it might be worth some more digging on my part, and probably an email to Audi customer services.

There was a point where they lowered the Co2 around 2007/8 even though the engine stayed the same. My ASB is £280 per year due to its Co2 of 223g/km

I'll do a search as I remember a few threads on the topic before.

Car tax band issue - its wrong

that thread is from 2011 so the info (may) be out of date.

The DVLA website lets you check the tax payable by looking up the registration number - this may not be the right page but it's in the right area: https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/Ev...execution=e2s1

If not the page where you enter your reg number look for "Vehicle enquiry" in the left hand menu, that should give you the answer you need.

Also, I think the cutoff date was 23rd march 2006, anything before that was 225 max but that's when the new (extended) bands came in.

Edit: Link doesn't work, hit the 'Home' button (Lower right) and then the 'Vehicle enquiry' button

Using that my reg comes back as

    Date of Liability 30 09 2013
    Date of First Registration 31 01 2008
    Year of Manufacture 2008
    Cylinder Capacity (cc) 2969cc
    CO2 Emissions 223g/Km
    Fuel Type HEAVY OIL
    Export Marker N
    Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
    Vehicle Colour BLUE
    Vehicle Type Approval M1
Vehicle Excise Duty rate for vehicle
    6 Months Rate £154.00
    12 Months Rate £280.00

    Seems to be right.

Thanks for the info both of you - it seems like another owner has been round the houses and come up with nothing. I know the earlier cars were in K (purely on date of registration) but it still seems as though they are basing the banding for all cars registered between 6th April 2006 and 30th April 2007 on them being 225's (which mine isn't).

What I picked up in other forums while looking for other DVLA errors like this is that it's all down to the manufacturer as to whether they will write a letter confirming what the CO2 rating should be. If Audi confirm it, DVLA will issue a refund.

Check with Audi, any dealer should be able to tell you via the engine number on their central computer.

At times like this I wish my A6 was £30/year just like my A3

Ahh I can see from your brochure link Gup, that says the saloon and avant are rated as 223/226 respectively.

So in theory if that is correct, all the data in section V at the bottom of the V5 should be ever so slightly higher for the avant...mine reads as follows:

    V1 - 0.205
    V3 - 0.219
    V4 - 0.245
    V5 - 0.017

If it isn't ever so slightly higher, something tells me an administrative error is the more likely reason they are different.
