Hi everyone, I've recently bought an audi s3 2000 amk for repair as it apparently needed a new clutch, I started the car and checked the clutch out and when pushing the pedal in it crunched every time. So I've pulled the gearbox out and everything looks fine, flywheel, clutch plate (could do with replacing), pressure plate, and release bearing. But in the bell housing right next to the release bearing (a couple of mm below) is lots of fragments of a small spring (loops are around 3-4mm). Where could this have come from? The friction plate doesn't have springs? And would this be what was causing the grinding? I'm thinking possibly some fragments are inside the slave cylinder and that's causing it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thank you. I'm no expert with dmf, but looking online the springs seem to be quite large and thick. The fragments are just from a small spring only a few mm in diameter and quite thin, so i'm unsure?

there is nowhere else any springs go, unless its from an oil seal of course, but then it would have an oil leak. can you post a pic of this spring ?
what does the dmf feel like ?
something must be causing the crunching ?

hmmm, there's no oil leak. I've kept all the spring bits, so will take a pic tomorrow and upload it. I haven't had a chance to properly check it out yet, but will have a further look tomorrow and put a pic up and hopefully someone can identify it. thanks

Rightio, fairly sure it's the dmf as there's grease spun around the bell housing. Take a look at the pics, but could the spring fragments be from the dmf? Is that grease normal?henooo 003.jpghenooo 004.jpg

I just bought a car to repair as I was told it needed a new clutch. Its got a dmf, I pulled the gearbox out and found lots of 'loops' off a spring, about 3-4mm in diameter, it's a spring broken up into lots of pieces, it's all in the release bearing. There's no where in the clutch system it could be from is there? There's not small springs used in the clutch system with a dmf is there? Could the bits have got in the dmf at all?thanks

    Hello Henry
The springs are probably from inside the dmf
In the 1.9tdi dmf there are several heavy springs in a circle.
inside these springs are smaller diameter springs,
inside the smaller springs are even smaller springs again.
The smallest diameter springs look like whats in your bell housing

    Regards
    Michael
