I'm a new owner of a 59 plate, with 78k miles. I have been reading the forums and seeing that owners with these particular models are getting close to 40mpg round town.

I drive mostly round town and as economically as possible but only manage to get 29mpg average? surely it should be much higher than this?
What could possibly be the problem?

    Thanks for any help

Economy will vary massively, especially if driven in town, stop start etc. If you drive like Miss Daisy, you will get 40mpg, like a normo, closer to 30+

I only average 30 mpg when using round town on short stop start journeys but will average 40 Plus on longer runs as long as you are light footed it is a car that can be thirsty and not as economical as people think
So i mostly use on longer runs that why my average is now 38 mpg which was 35 mpg before

I've never achieved anything 40 around town with mine, probably more like 32-34mpg but my average overall varies between 38-40mpg and that's still on generally runs in/out of town, I live four miles out. On good longer distance runs it'll easily average the high forties to fifty mpg.

I would second the above. Admittedly my car is a Leon but it shares the same engine and I've had similar experience with the fuel consumption. Town mpg is generally in the 30s (can dip to the 20s on very short runs) and motorway mid 40s. Overall in the last 1000 miles I've averaged 40.3mpg and that's been pretty much a 50/50 split between town and motorway driving. For a petrol car of its size and power I'm happy enough with that. Tends to be the warm-up stage that uses the most fuel as if you reset the counter mid-journey its very easy to get it into the late 40s/ early 50s in any driving condition.

A bit off message but for those that want to know.

I get around 56mpg on a mixed (half urban and country/motorway) 60 mile round trip for work. motorway driving (70) is low 60's and if there is a lot of 50mph e.g. roads works it can hit 68-70mpg. blue motion stats seem about right, if I put my foot down in the corners on the back roads MPG goes out the window. common sense I guess, I don't really want to drive everywhere at 60mph.

also getting it serviced helped to improve MPG.

Sorry but that doesn't help as you're driving a 1.6 TDI and not a 1.4 TSI.

How long is your typical journey? (mileage, not time )

I had my all time low this morning, 2 mile from cold and driven hard in between traffic and a cheeky overtake - 23mpg
