    Hi ya Neil ...

Your car is the exact thing I'm thinking of doing on my next purchase (I'm not selling yet just doing prep work ), you bought a 2yr old car in 2011 with 100k ish on it ...
For my future purchase I'm thinking 100k+ but max 3yrs old car ...

I've seen some 2.0, 2.7 & 3.0 TDi's on AT, varying £10-£15K hoping to go on test drives as soon as time allows to feel how they drive but I gotta be honest the interiors look great even the drivers seats on some show very little signs of wear in photos ...

Sorry to tag in but thought I'd share my experience.. Okay I bought mines with pretty low mileage 43k... But when I was test driving it was hard to tell the mileage in these car's as they do ware pretty well! Another thing I noticed 100k + car's had a better record of maintenance *as in nothing needing done, as it's already been done!
I'd rather go for a newer car with high mileage than an older car with low mileage! That's just my opinion though... Some pretty good deal's to be had Gups... It's certainly a buyer market!
Sometimes I wish I taken my own advice and bought a facelift one!

Thanks mate for post ... a valid discursive point ... I would like to read/see people post thoughts like yours for and against buying high mileage cars ...

I too when buying my A6 really could not tell the difference between say a high mileage car vs a lower mileage car concerning drive dynamics but I did what I usually do, a balance between age/mileage/budget ... I never thought to explore why I should or should not buy a high mileage newer car ...

What started all this I was reading threads on various engines faults and one person posted you shouldn't be put off by high mileage cars and he expanded into:-

    • High mileage vehicles get more servicing done.
    • Reach operating temps quicker as they are driven on longer journeys.
    • M-way vs local driving a car is at constant speed more often rather than stop-starts, etc, etc.
    • A greater chance of any production issues dependant on mileage would have occurred and been repaired.

Plus other stuff ... another thought which crossed my mind was that you reduce you chances of buying a clocked car if going for one which is under 3yrs old if it has 100k+ on it ...

The way I look at it is that if the car has put on say 100k miles in two years (mine was registered in Feb 09 and i bought in May 11 with 98k) it MUST have been pretty much all motorway miles. No stress on the engine and a service book full of stamps....give me that anyday over an older car with low miles and the last couple of stamps missing from the book.

Bodywork is likely to be better on a newer car also, as well as the interior. No brainer to me.....

On interior usually only driver seat in more use the rest of the seats are gonna be like new ...

TBH the more I think about it the more it seems a no brainer to me as well Neil ...

Only time will tell if I follow this angle on my next purchase ...

My old company had one of the largest fleets in the UK and around 8,000 company cars on top, they even have their own 'fleet' division.

With several of area sales managers covering 40k miles per annum their cars were replaced at 100k miles or 4yrs, whichever came soonest. Regardless they were religiously serviced/maintained to the lower mileage requirements using OEM parts and lubricants. So can appreciate that a) any 'snagging issues' will have been ironed out b) Any repairs would be repaired and not masked c) The engines would be fully 'broken in' offering the best possible economy to potential future purchasors.

Unfortunately Audi weren't available (Merc, BMW and VW's were though). Most of these high mileage leased vehicles are sold on through one or two preferred used car (supermarket) groups.

Interesting thread this since I had similar questions on here earlier regarding a high mileage A6 (approx 160k on a 57 plate!) I was thinking of buying.
I'm totally in agreement with all of the above regarding maintenance and motorway miles, wear & tear etc. My only thought and something that would be a concern for me is that my usage would be totally different to anything the car had before if I went for a high mileage younger car. I would be doing short regular journeys (school runs etc), lots of town driving so sods law is that anything that has avoided repair/replacement due to motorway driving would start to go wrong under my ownership. This might not necessarily be the case with a older, lower mileage example that might already of had plenty of city driving under its belt and potentially it's fair share of expensive repairs.
Also, seeing as the pre-facelift 2.0 TDI/Multitronic looks more susceptible to major failure that the facelift, I decided against it for now until I've saved up a lot more cash for a facelift model

I bought my 56 plate S Line 2.0 Tdi last August with 101000 on the clock for £5.5k. All stamps in the book. It had just had a new turbo on it the week before I got it. Its now got 180,000 on it, Only had a couple of minor problems. Oil leak from where the oil filter housing sits on the block, 60 quid to sort and slight problem trying to connect my phone to the MMI. Quick software update sorted that. To look at you really would not think its done that kind of mileage. Im going to keep this one till it dies, I'm intrigued to see how long it will last,

Maybe I'm talking/thinking myself into this angle on my new purchase plan () ... thanks for posting ...

My thinking is a clutch will be in worse condition from local (start/stop) driving then m-way ... seen posts's concerning people changing wheel bearings on less than 100k cars on here, so would the younger higher mileage car been done? () ... gearbox condition has been one thing I think about but then again like the clutch would not local (start/stop) driving then m-way be more stressful then constant speed () ...

Again seen posts like shocks done on low mileage cars, what potentials mechanical problems to you envisage? if you post perhaps others can expand/give info ...

For example Neil and his A6, is 2009 bought in 2011 had 100k, now 140k and being driven in London one of the most start/stop places ...
