Hi I'm new to forum and this is my first post, so go easy lol but I've been searching around the forum to find pros and cons on the 1.4 tsi 122 and 2.0 tdi 110 engine, I'm not necessarily after economy but would like to know which is best to get in terms of reliability and also tuning prospective.

So far I've gathered that the 1.4 tsi 122 is the same engine as the twincharger just without the supercharger and the realistic maximum amout of output with out spending to much is 160bhp which is fine as I'm not after a race car but will it be reliable as if the 2.0 tdi 110 was mapped?

I have also gathered that the 2.0 tdi 110 engine is effectively a 140bhp without 6gears and I have since seen them to be mapped to 170-190bhp which is great again and I am aware that dtuk do a tuning box that takes them to 150 but I will shy away from those boxes due to previous experiences.

So ultimately which is the better engine?

What gives acceleration is torque not BHP.
BHP is what limits an engines ability to maintain a speed under load.
So you need to balance your requirements with the engines abilities, then tune it accordingly.
Diesel engines are no good for lots of short trips (DPF etc.) What are you going to be using it for?
Then, do you want to put a noisy exhaust on it, diesels do not sound great. (I once saw an AMG merc with huge pipes on, it was a diesel and sounded awful).

Depending on your driving requirements will determine petrol or diesel. Both engines are fine but if they are tuned then as with any car they will become less reliable as VW designed them them to be the way they are in standard form.

I currently have an corsa limited edition 1.3 diesel it has an piper dpf back pipe straight to the tip (no back box) it sounds better but obviously nothing amazing, my car has been mapped from 6 months of age by Thorney to 105bhp from 75bhp I have had no problems so far, I'm not interested in removing the dpf as I hate the smoke, ideally I would like to know which out of the two engines is more reliable for 20kish miles a year I know that diesels are stronger engines but would the tsi 122 be reliable enough for that sort of milage once mapped?

Unfortunately the only 140 engine spec I can insure is the se spec and in the price range I'm aiming to spend they all have high milage.

Thanks for the comments, much appreciated.

as far as i'm aware, they're both equally as reliable - i was only recently looking and spent a good long time looking for my golf and happened across my GT TDI. absolutely love it.

if you can find yourself a decent SE spec 140 model - quite a few come with MFSW and even parking sensors you can't go wrong, with regards to the mileage - if its a 1 owner car - preferable ex-lease as they tend to be relatively well looked after (both of my last two cars were ex-lease) and have a full service history, the diesel cars can go on forever.

i bought my last mk5 ex-lease at 120k miles, put 50k miles on it in just under 2 and a half years and all it needed was a new clutch/flywheel and turbo - these are common items for any diesel depending on how you drive/how its been driven - they can go just as easily at 30k as they can at 130k - once you've replaced them however, at least you know that they've been done and are good for at least another 150k miles!

all depends what your budget is and what you consider high mileage - theres some decent specced ones going for around 10k with low mileage, well specced with higher mileage (around 100k) for about 8k

That simply isn't true. The 2.0 TDI 110 has more torque than both the 122PS and 160PS 1.4 TSI but takes a good couple of seconds longer to accelerate 0-60.

For the OP I think the 122PS would suit well. Its a very good all-round engine offering a nice combination of respectable performance and low running costs.

Ok cheers for your comments again I feel the best thing for me to do is to test drive both engines, I have previously driven a 2.0 tdi 140 scirocco (the mothers old car) and that was ace to drive.

Another question I have is about Revo remaps, information on their website shows that they take the 2.0 tdi 110 to 180bhp and 295lbs ft of torque, is this right and has anyone had this done. My take on the gain is that they remap the engine as if it was the 140bhp engine as they are exactly the same engine and turbo, just seems a lot of gain 70bhp
