More problems with this car. Two months ago it looks like the cylinder head had gone. (Oil in water etc, starting to blow white smoke/steam). The engine ran at this point. The car was then left for about two months (parked at an angle). We went to try and start it today - with jump leads. (It didn't have much fuel so we added a gallon). It turned over but not even an attempt to start - had quite a few tries!
I decided to check the fuel lines. Disconected the supply line to the filter - nothing. Turned on ignition, nothing, turned over engine, nothing. So sucked some fuel through then repeated. No fuel being pumped. Not knowing diesel cars I thought maybe it doesn't have a seperate pump and the fuel is drawn through the filter by the injector pump. So I disconnected the return pipe from this and sucked fuel through - it took a little while and did come thorough with some air. Tried turning the engine with pipe disconnected - only a very little fuel came through. Again with the pipe reconnected the engine made no attempt to start.
So, what next? If anyone could point me in the right direction with regards to components of, how the fuel system works and what I should be doing to check/put right I would be grateful.

I've got the car running. Used advice from here to make sure the system was primed, then a few attempts with a fresh battery did the trick.
Now my next job - to replace the cylinder head gasket.
I've done a few petrol engines but never a diesel. Is there anything I should watch out for? Any particular tips? I've got the haynes manual - it looks like I need to get hold of the engine locking tools, and camshaft sprocket holding and pulling tools.
Is there any thing else I should replace whilst it's in bits. (The timing belt was replaced less than a year ago - is it OK to reuse this?)
    Thanks.
