Following on from my Italian Holidy thread fiasco where my A6 1.9TDI Auto Gearbox failed whilst in Italy - please can someone advise on my options.

The Car is being recovered to the UK in the next 10 days and Audi have quoted £5000 to replace and fit the gearbox - Ouch!

    My questions are:

The car is 4 years old and has done 105,000 miles but has always been main dealer serviced - are Audi UK likely to acept any responsibility as a gesture of goodwill?

Is it worth looking at a secondhand or recon gearbox?

How many miles should you expect from an auto box?

How difficult is it to swap gearboxs?

    Thanks all advice apriciated

Unfortunately thing fail, the servicing doesn't guarantee no faults just help to prevent them.

I would complain to Audi, if the car is out of warranty they need do nothing so even half would be a bonus.

I would have a look at getting yours reconditioned, your quote from Audi is just stupid numbers.

Depending where you are in the country there is bound to be a reputable company that would recon a unit that is only 4 years old as the parts will be easy to obtain.

Although I'm not in the trade any more, i was born and brought up in it and I would be amazed if you cant get the job done properly for a grand or there abouts.

I dont know where your based but I did come across a website a week or so back for a company based in Milton Keynes that specialised in all things Audi and that included reworking the auto gearboxes.

let us know how you get on

There is a place in Leatherhead, Surrey, called Hardys Engineering and they will rebuild your Audi gearbox for a fraction of the new price, I cannot believe Audi are charging £5,000 for a new gearbox, what planet are they on, if they had designed the thing properly in the first place you would not need a replacement.

    Pleased to hear it.

Finding a good independent is always the best way with jobs like that. I have to say the Audi dealers appear to be from another planet when it comes to charging.

I took mine in to get a price for its next service, i was told with a big smile that it was a cheap one, basically oil and filters and that it would only be £300.....!!!!!!

Hopefully you can look forward to an awful lot more miles before they try to surgically attach themselves to your wallet again.

Thanks, I'll give them a ring in the morning.

However, I don't hold out much hope as every specialist I have spoken to has said the Multitronic is a nightmare to fix with no one offering a repair service. Something to do with the complexity of the box and specialist tooling required.

The latest on the Gbox - its with Audi and there were were a few fault codes but nothing significant. The oil was drained and was clean with no swarf. However they cant tell me whats wrong, just that it doesn't work and therefore needs replacing - brilliant diagnosis!!!!

Audi UK have offered nothing in terms of a good will gesture despite the car only being 4 years old and a full Audi service history. I accept its out of warranty and has done 100K but thats on the motorway and thats not exactly taxing.

The dealer have reduced the price to £4200 but thats as cheep as I have found anywhere.

    The lesson: DON'T BUY A MULTITRONIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just spoke with Hardys Engineering and they recomended going with Audi and that £4200 wasn't a bad price!!!

These Multitronic Gboxs should come with a health warning!!!!!!
