Hello all, Iv recently purchased a Audi A4 Avant with a 2.0 TDi engine, first time Iv had a 2.0 diesel and Iv already been in and out the garage

As I was driving the car back after purchasing I noticed the lack of power in the low rev range and some heavy clouds of black smoke under heavy throttle whilst standing.

I took it straight to the garage whilst letting the owner know of my dissappointment who claims he genuinely sold the car without knowing about these issues.

Had it fully serviced and the EGR valve cleaned. Smoke had now cleared up but still suffering the lack of power in the low rev range but still enough power after 1900revs.

changed the maf sensor today as well as one of the valves behind the front bottom grill, n75?

Again, slightly better but still not enough power as it should be or is this how these engines are? Maybe it's a avant so quite heavy so will be sluggish below 2000 revs?

A week of ownership and already contemplating to sell. Would appreciate any input.

    What's your engine code?

    If BLB then sell.

Will have to wait for the logbook to come through, I just hope I don't make a massive loss. I'm guessing you have had experience with the BLB engine or is it just so common as I have seen quite a few posts with similar issues.

Most BLB engines suffer from oil pump balance shafts which are expensive to repair.

Just search 'blb' on here and you'll see the horror stories.

If you look in your spare wheel well then it will show the engine code there.

I have a 2ltd blb engine, it now has 140k on the clock, turbo packed up at 105k, alternator bearings at 115k and i now have to change the air con pump as its u/s, it smokes at start up and sounds like a bag of nails but will still give my sons BMW series 3 a run for its money, off to Germany again this year, not worried in the slightest it will not get me there and back, dont be put off by scare stories, there are thousands of blb engines out there running well, if you are worried then get a GOOD mechanic to check it out, there is a conversion kit for the oil pump i have been led to believe, the problems you describe say to me a faulty pipe either on the egr valve or near the turbo, if it looks frayed change it.

My last weekend was all spent tuning between home and garage, I work very long hours Monday to Friday and having a car that needs extra attention to run smooth is very difficult. Like advised previously, I might just end up selling and cutting my loss. Someone has already offered me £3000 for it despite my high mileage (183,000) but I haven't accepted it because I'm uncertain of what they will fetch with my mileage and issues.

I don't want you to think i'm being harsh, but aren't you expecting a lot from a car that has that kind of mileage? Not to say it isn't capable of running to twice that mileage but in my experience anything that has done that much work, no matter how well maintained, is going to need some regular TLC and fettling to remain roadworthy and fully-functioning.

I did do a few checks and valuations before purchasing and privately it would still fetch more than £3000, more dissappointment if I don't get £3000. But I will start another thread about "What's my Audi worth?", and have more input from the forum.
