I think this might be the large control arm to chassis bushes. I really should get uder the car and check though. Has anyone doe this job themselves? Heynes says I need to remove the rear springs and then remove the cotrol arm. Is there any alternative to removing the springs?
As an aside, the car was 4 wheel aligned about 2 years ago. Are any other bushes likely to be the problem?

Get your camber arm bushes and bolts replaced. Don't just get the bush, the secret is in the bolts. They get rusted and they mess up the camber over time.

VW has released a rear suspension spring lower spring plate -- replacement rubber plate to replace the rubber/metal one due to noise.
It's for Passats from '05 to May '07MY. Passats from May '07 been done from production.
    The part numbers are:
    Plates 1k0512297d x2
    Bolts n10628601 x2
    Nuts n10106402 x2
One hour labour to do. The parts are around £10 for the lot from VW

How did you have your four wheel alignment done? An olde fashioned static won't cut it. Has to be Laser alignment, like at a Hunter franchise. Let me know if you want copy of my printout? 2011 done and no feathering on my '06MY estate

Tanks for that comprehensive answer. It's much appreciated. Yes, it was 4 wheel laser alignment. A place called pro-grip near Stirling. I'm needing 4 new tyres soon so I want to get the bushes done first. I'll get back on here with progress.
    Cheers
