Well, after al the work I've done on my car recently, I thought I'd spend a few hours and get her cleaned up, washed, Poorboys Blackhole applied then covered with Natty's Blue paste wax..............she looks gorgeous.

Unfortunately, I can't even post a pic or two as I'm so annoyed....lol ( Insert many & varied expletives for annoyed !! )

Got in my car and took my son to drop his car off today............It was such a warm day, around 22c I put the AC on COLD & FULL BLAST only to receive a slow steady stream of warm air.

Was hoping it may just need re gassed although I knew it probably wasn't likely.

Took it to an Air con specialist who did a free check and said that the gas was fine, no issues there.

Upon further inspection, he seems to think it looks like the following...

Compressor has gone ( shaft snapped I think he said ) £394+vat
High pressure sensor needs replaced £49.83+vat
Labour to remove bumper, remove and refit compressor etc £120+vat
    Regas £40+vat

I get the total to £724.59

Wow - wasn't expecting this when I woke up this morning!!

To be fair I suspected that something wasn't quite right for some time, it just didn't seem quite as cold, but other than that nothing I could put my finger on

Going to head off to do a little research...............Any useful / helpful comments appreciated as always

    OUCH!!

Sorry to hear this Jim, especially after you've been battling for so long to get your other isues sorted! What a bar steward.

And it looks as if those weren't even main dealer prices....? Gotta be worth a second opinion somewhere?

(And your temp has been about 7 deg C warmer than down here today. Tried to work at home with no heating on. My feet are like icicles. )

    Hey Jim,

Sorry to hear you are having problems and facing shelling out more money.

As always I'd recommend shopping around, not only for a 2nd opinion but also prices. If the shaft has gone, would you not be able to see it? Could that part be fixed somehow, say new shaft made up/welded? Just a thought.

If you are looking at new parts, try and get the part numbers then it's easier to widen the search on those specifically.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Final thought, with the weather in the UK at least you don't have to get it fixed in a hurry !

Thanks for the kind words Gonzo / Andy.

You're right, thats not main dealer prices, I need to contact them to see what they have to say about it.

Probably around £1200 I'd guess, hopefully they'll fix it for free....lol

Willdo on the shopping around part Andy, as always...........

Why is there so much month left at the end of the money??

Gutted for you Jim... I'd definitely get a 2nd opinion on it though! Maybe ring Audi Technik and A 4 Audi for any AC recommended dealer's?! Need a hand give me a shout...

    Hey Jim,

Another thought (hence the smell of burning !!) could it be the clutch on the compressor that is faulty? Also a quick look on fleabay shows many new ones for around £230 so worthwhile knowing exactly what you are after. Good chance you can get the initial estimate down a bit.

A quick look through the internet seems like there is multiple issues here and a known fault too?

How about starting with a vcds scan and output tests?

I've just changed my a/c pressure sensor today and anyone that tells you it can be done with the bumper on must have fingers like an aye-aye.

Anyways I done it with bumper in place with normal fat fingers, alot swearing, and grazed bruised hands. i had to move a lot of crap out the way and to be honest it would have been easier to take the bumper off. I cleared the fault code and it's not registering as faulty anymore - checked a/c pressure and it's only 2bar so will regas it tomorrow.

I would get a fault scan done the most common fault for these is the pressure sensor/regas.

The o-rings are a weak point and deteriorate through lack of circulating lubricant I.e. long periods of inactivity. Causing gas to leak too.

I'm hoping a regas sorts mine out if not as mentioned next in line would be clutch plate in compressor.

    Good luck!!

Hi Jim I have had 2 compressors rebuilt over the years via the garage I use in Bonnybridge. The guy completely strips and re-builds them using new seals etc and they have always worked faultlessly afterwards. I didn't deal with the guy directly therefore can't tell you his name, but if you speak to Duncan at Hypertech (01324 812212) he will put you in touch. Tell him Richard Temple put you in touch. Hope this helps. Cheers
