    last night i was on my way home at around 50mph when i mistook the handbrake switch for a window switch the car made a nasty grinding noise and broke hard the car seems fine now, dont these electronic handbrakes have a cut off over certain speeds

    That's the emergency brake, totally normal just don't make a habit of it!

    luckily there was no one behind think i left some brown skid marks on the road though

    Lol @ some of your comments, not your situation though.

    Thanks for testing it out and glad to know it works A ok as it should.

    I assume all is well and we'll hear if anything different transpires?

    had it checked out at Audi it is fine apparently it is eu legislation that if the driver falls ill the passenger can stop the car ?

    Yes it is a standard feature - the C6 has it as well (yes I read most of my old owners manual when I got the car).
    However, in 8 years of ownership I've never had the desire to test it. Well DONE!

    All electric handbrake cars do this. I always experiment when i have a hire car... Never tried it about 10 mph in the A6.

    The grinding noise is your ABS brakes working overtime!
    S6 Black Avant: Tech advanced, Matrix, Keyless entry, Sunroof, Speed limit display, Tow bar, Rear camera
