My wife has just had our Touran serviced and there seems to be a level of confusion from VW on what options are available.

We bought the car from VW and they told us it had been put on the std 'Fixed Service' with 12mth / 12k mile interval. I figured I would wait until the service was due, then drop it onto the 'Flexible Service' (long life) with 24mth / 18k mile interval. Having owned Passats before, my understanding is the only difference between the 2 is the oil used.

When my wife told them what we wanted, she was told that the same oil is used for both, so there is no difference in cost?? Having had the service done, I noticed when driving the car at the wknd that the service info was saying: 'service required in 11k miles or 11 mths'. We are querying this with them, but they have not given a clear response.

Anybody have any experience with this??

Depending on the use of the vehicle it would either be variable or fixed.

If it was set to fixed at delivery and the dealer checked the coding on the service it would state fixed and so they would carry out a fixed service as that is the schedule its on.

Most current diesels use the same spec oil for longlife whether they are variable or not. Longlife should only be for vehicles that cover a minimum 25 miles per day.

From experience variable servicing isn't very good for engines especially diesels and isn't very cost effective in the long term. Stay with the 12month/10k mile interval as going more than 1 year before looking over a car is not good and there are items on services due at a time interval so you end up going into a dealer more often for individual items like brake fluid etc.

    Update to above:
I spoke with the VW garage that did the service and explained the service computer had not been re-set properly. My wife dropped the car back in again and they re-programmed it for the long life.

HOWEVER..... the service info is now blank and simply showing "-------" for the mileage before service. I talked to them again and they said this would rectify itself once the car has been driven for a 'bit', but couldn't quantify what a 'bit' was!!

We have since done about 500 miles since this was done, and it is still blank........ guess another phone call to VW is on the cards!!
