A loud growling sound from front left?

Hi
Ok..i've done a good bit of work on my mk3 93 1.4 and shes running like a dream. I have however a very loud growling sound comming from the front left wheel. Its not a grinding or knocking but i can only best describe it as a Growling sound? Its quiet loud and kinda goes through you when driving. It only seems to start once i hit 40ish+ and is very annoying.

I had the tracking done about 6mths ago and she has a set of vw 15 rims.
The other day i was doing about 80ish on the moterway and felt a wobble in the car very scary. The steering and steering wheel seemed fine, but i brought her back down to 55 and she was ok. Wonder if this is a knock on effect of some kind. Also the steering cracks when turning (no PAS) i asked when geting tracking done to have CV joints looked at but the lazy f***er didn't do it for me... Any help on the front left would be great..
