The development time for components that go into a new car are quite lengthy, Audi were probably specifying the design for the the MMI system in the current A6/A7 as much as 5 years ago when the mobile phone world was very different. In that time the use of rSAP by phone manufacturers has declined such that it is almost often not part of the spec for phones being launched today. Audi seem to have finally recognised this now, with the 2014 A6 now allowing Bluetooth and in-Dash SIM to be used simultaneously, little consolation for those with earlier cars though unless they can come up with a retrofit solution

The whole Android situation adds a further level of complexity as each manufacturer of an Android device is using their own variation of the OS, at least (from a car manufacturer perspective) Apple, Blackberry and Microsoft provide a more consistent platform for them to design to. Is it reasonable to expect Audi to support a device that had not even been designed when they designed the MMI software that uses an OS that because of its "open" nature is being implemented in a variety of different non standard ways? BMW get around a lot of these issues by using a built in Vodafone SIM to provide the data connectivity leaving the phone to be just a phone. This does mean though that after the initial 3 years of free data BMW owners will have to pay a subscription if they wish to carry on using the data functionality of iDrive.

Quite true.. I actually came from a new 5 series (F10) to the A7.. The BMW method is much better. Audi should adopt this as it saves all the trouble we are seeing.

    Thanks for the reply..
As I said, I'm experimenting with solutions for the address book. if I find one that works, i will post an update

HTC one with Audi A7 2012

    rSAP - FIXED and working
Phonebook transfer to car - FIXED and working.

You need to do a lot of tinkering with root etc.. but it is achievable. If I can do it, you can..
You need to visit this site

    rSAP:
first read this: How To Install rSAP
Then this: rSAP for Android Forum • View topic - Information about HTC One (m7) pay attention to the section named alternative installation. You will need to do this once your phone is rooted. It's dead easy. Just download the file on that page to your phone.. (just use your phone and download) then boot your phone into recovery mode. Once there, install the files you downloaded. re boot the phone to normal.

Make sure you then download the app from google play - rSAP bluetooth

Once this is done, it should work..

    Phonebook sync:

You need to download this: rSAP for Android Forum • View topic - Test for HTC phones
If it works with your phone, when you mate the phone with the car, if your car asks to transfer the contacts, say NO. you should then find 3 contacts (none that you know) have transferred. If this is so, then the full program (also available from the play store) will transfer the whole of your contacts. Just ensure that the uncheck the Pbap option.

The whole process above took me about 2 hours to complete, but in all honesty, most of that time was ensuring I knew how to root etc..
Actual time to do the processes is very quick..

    Good luck..

Hmmm. And here was me thinking that after 4 years of having an iPhone it was time for a change. It looks like Apple will still have me as a customer. A shame as I really like the look of the One.

Ok, So after a week or so of email exchange with HTC customer service and them initially saying it Audi's fault. I pointed them to a post on the Audiworld.com forum.

"Turns out the answer is that HTC's implementation of their phone book is the problem, not necessarily Audi's MMI (although it's awful that Audi provides no feedback on the error!). Samsung encodes the address entries correctly while HTC does no encoding. You can see this if you load contacts in both phones and then export them in VCARD format. Samsung's address entries are encoded and unreadable while HTC's are clear text.

The trick is indeed to remove the carriage returns which should not impact the address in any way if you replace them with a space (" ").

This could be useful for anyone that has issues with ANY HTC phone synching with their car via bluetooth as the phone book implementation is the same on all of their phones. Importantly it is not the bluetooth implementation that is flawed (it should never see a carriage return in a field), it is the HTC phonebook implementation that is flawed.
    "

    and got this responce

"Fair enough David, first I apologize for the inconvenience I can raise a feature request escalation in order to fix it in later updates so at least we will know this had some effect, with your permission I will be happy to do so."

I don't know if this will be of any use or whether they will even do any thing at all. I got my phone through EE and they haven't released the last update that is supposed to improve the camera!

uktivo, I haven't really looked that much into rooting my phone as I'm terrified of bricking it!! Which program (if that's the right word) did you use to root it, I thought there were several?

    Cheers Dave

I have done everything up to the phone book sync. If you could clarify the proceedure at this stage in a little more detail I am not 100% sure how to implement this part of the process. As of this point the phonebook will still not sync with the mmi

    thank you in advance

This process did work the app that is needed is in the google play store under bluetooth phonebook. The test version of the app did not work but I bought the full version for 1.95 and it was able to fix the problem and up loaded the contact once I unpair and repaired the device. This also worked to fix the phonebook issue with the HTC one x+ but with this ........all I did was download the bluetooth phonebook app onto the phone the unpair and repair the device with the MMI. I would try to use the app first before rooting the phone not sure if it is necessary or not since I had already rooted the HTC One but with the HTC One x+ i did not root the phone and it also fixed the problem.

    Hope this helps.
