  1. Question Removing Ignition Switch 1990 Audi 90

I need to remove the ignition switch on a 1990 Audi 90.

The switch is between the ignition lock and a wiring harness connector.

I have remove the wiring harness and can see the electrical contact side of the switch. It is NOT apparent how to release the switch from a cast metal holding cylinder.

The "official" Bentley manual for this vehicle has good electrical schematic diagrams for the switch functions, but it does not seem to address the physical removal and replacement.

News Aug 27 !!!! Bentley "official" Audi 80/90 manual cleverly puts COMPLETE details of ignition switch removal in section 94.18 (Electrical System - Exterior Lights).

Removal of steering column is required. That procedure further requires removal of the air bag.

Insofar as the existing ignition lock still permits movement of the steering wheel, I'm going to explore shunt wiring on the wiring harness receptacle.

    Any comments would be appreciated.

    Aloha !

Do you want to remove just the switch or the lock barrel?

To remove the switch you need to take off the column shroud, undo and remove the two bolts that hold the upper part of the column.

The column should no drop enough for you to get to the two screws that hold the switch in the back of the barrel assembly.

If you need to you can remove the lock assembly from the column by undoing the Torx bolt that holds it on.

If you need to remove the lock cylinder you need to drill a hole in the lock assembly, you'll need a diagram and measurements to do this which are in a haynes manual if you can get hold of one.

Like he said, I'm not sure what you are trying to do! If you just want to seperate the switch unit from the ignition barrel, there are 2 slot headed grub screws fitted in the metal casting eather side of the switch body. These screws are covered over with blobs of red paint at the factory! Loosen the screws and the switch unit should slide out towards the front.
The ignition barrel can also be removed from the cast housing. You need to drill a 3mm hole in a specific location on the casting, this allows the retaining clip to be released. I can't describe the location, or post a picture, maybe its in the Bentley?
