I've a '97 A4 Avant which desperately needs new wheels. The powdercoating has broken down leaving me to pump up the fronts every other day. I fancy trying some more recent Audi wheels from a breaker but dont know if they fit. Also can I go from the 15" to 16 or bigger without any modification to the car
    TIA

So long as you keep to a pcd of 5x112 and the et is appropriate for the rim diameter/tyre size, plenty of alloy wheel size guides on the forum or google.
Also keep in mind that the very latest Audi rims have a centre bore of 66 approx whereas the earlier cars like yours have a c/bore of 57.1 approx.
So if that lot baffled you, yes, you could go with most Audi 5 stud rims up to about 2007'ish, up to about 18".
225x45x18 is probably as big as you want to go so long as you remember the et to make sure the wheel/tyre does not rub your arch or internally against your suspension.
As for modification, no need until you get silly size.
Search the forum section relating to wheels/tyres and glean all the info you can.

If you are not looking at properly modifying the ride, then you can look at the fuel cap flap there are tyre pressures for each of the three standard wheel sizes.

My standard size is 205/55/16 but I fit the narrower 195/65/15 with snow tyres for the winter. There was also another in-between size that I can't remember (and, of course a silly space saver bike wheel size for those that have one)

You will have no problem getting a set of 16" alloys from a breakers and be safe in the knowledge that they are an OE size.
